Early AC/DC releases have been torn apart, cobbled together and resold in various territories in such a way that nobody but the Australian consumer can delight in the sheer joy that is listening to albums like TNT from start to finish, as intended by the band. Sure, it lacks the polish and poise of later albums, but it makes up for this with buckets of raw, naked power, and a menacing intensity of a rock band doing it hard on the road, and giving every drop of blood and sweat to their cause.
"It's a Long Way to the Top" was the anthem that put AC/DC on the map, it's lyrics a timeless essay warning of the perils of risking it in the music business. You can trust Bon Scott, he really means every word of this classic song.
"Rock 'n' Roll Singer", "High Voltage" and "Rocker" see Bon laying it on the line. This is who I am, this is what I do. Spelling it out for us, that he, and the rest of the band were born to rock. "Rocker" redefines the word "frenetic".
"The Jack" tells it how it is... A slow, tough blues/boogie that says "I screw around, I'm a dirty guy, I screwed a dirty girl and I paid the price".
"Live Wire" and "T.N.T." might sound like chest-beating and posturing, lyrically, but these riffs are so damn tough, the music so brutal and heavy, the tunes deserve to sound as dangerous and threatening as Bon's lyrics make them.
"Can I Sit Next to You Girl" and "School Days" connect AC/DC with their past. Their influences, and their youth, and with the teenagers that grew to be a mighty army of supporters. This album still has all the trademarks of a slightly derivative boogie band still finding it's feet, whilst heralding a future where AC/DC distill all that is hard and heavy in rock music, with the honesty and street-wise wisdom of a bunch of working class boys out to take on the world, regardless of the cost.
Why, oh why is TNT not available all over the world in it's original form? This is a crime against Rock. It must be addressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Back when they were ... 9 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
A long time before they even thought they would emblazon a black t-shirt of a moronic US cartoon character, AC/DC were a no-frills hard rocking Australian pub band.

This collects this sound - from when Bon Scott fronted the band. Sadly,he died before they became the worldwide phenonemon they are today.

Equally as sad is how little of this music is known to the latter day AC/DC fans. My preference is for this era - the newer stuff is just too headbanging for my liking.

This contains some fantastic tracks such as High Voltage (one of the top ten rock songs of all time), A Long Way to the Top and TNT.

The other tracks aren't quite so good, but the abovementioned lift the rating in my book. The sound is pared back, sharp and filled with the personality of Bon Scott's voice. In later incarnations, AC/DC changed singers without too many people noticing, but you can tell the difference from Bon Scott's departure.

Simple, yes, bovine, perhaps, but undeniable in the energy and the uncomplicated, hard, driving sound that epitomises rock and roll.
