At reciept of this gift I was thinking it was a great idea, however only after getting it out of the box did I realise how flawed the product is.
It's fair enough that the product is self-assembly, but the assembly is overly complicated, to which the assembly guide doesn't let on.
After separating the pieces I realised that the product was different (most likely a different version) than the guide, meaning that parts were differently shaped or I had less parts making me briefly think that the finished product could not be acheived. Wanting to make the most of my gift I continued even though following instructions took translation but as I proceeded I found that the step by step guide missed steps or became presumptuous, for example telling me to 'attatch "this"' - whatever "this" is. Carrying on to the point of frustration I was disappointed to realise the reliance on my own putting together of the wiring nad placing stickers on the product that meant if I didn't find the correct placement, the projection would be off-position.
I turned the "finished" base unit over (there is no bottom to the base unit meaning wires tip the stand off of it's axis) and the final part of the astrostar - the star map.
My star map was made of 3 folded hexagonal pieces, not 4 as in the guide, but I proceeded to remove the protective film around the boards. The extremely tedious job of assembling the star boards took near an hour in itself but even though I followed the instructions, I still ended up with a star dome that was delicate and had tabs (however trimmed as instructed) that I was sure would obstruct the projection. Not only this but the stars on the map encroached onto the tabs or the letters for construction onto the star map meaning that stars were lost or there was a great 'C' tab projected onto the wall.
Finally attatching the dome to the base meant I had to apply a great amount of pressure on the delicate dome to click it into place, which could have easily damaged it.
I sat back exhausted with my finished product to the realisation that there was little instruction to what was being projected, the particular stars I was looking at or what time of year this would be found. Also finding that the protective film I could have removed at this point but was instructed to earlier meant that the dome I had created (tediously!) was inside out and would project backwards, even though the instructions gave no prior warning for this. I had turned on the bulb to find a very dimly projected star map but thought twice about wasting money on this product.
Overall this product was a great idea that never came to fruition. It is rickety, annoyingly difficult to assemble, looks cheap and has me disappointed and angry over what should have been a great gift.
In short - AVOID!!
