Candiria's debut effort for Century Media, "300 Percent Density", is an amazing piece of music that breaks more ground than a California earthquake. In fact, its just plain uncanny how well this Brooklyn based five piece gracefully meld together Jazz, Math Metal, Hardcore, Death Metal, Rap, Techno, Metalcore and more into an auditory wrecking ball that has the ability to utterly demolish the listeners predefined expectations of song structures and just how smoothly genres can be blended.
Band vocalist Carley Coma rockets out of the gate with full on intensity and a vicious metalcore / hardcore approach, busting out his lyrics with brute force and intertwining the occasional rap to change up the pace. As if to raise the bar, It seems as though this time around, his vocal range is based more upon coarse hard edged barks in the vein of say Hatebreed as opposed to the slightly death metal vocal style he immersed himself in on the bands last outing and the end result gives the band a much harder edge. Meanwhile, guitar work is intricate and gritty with raw NY hardcore roots that have been molded into a modern metalcore style, chockfull of belligerent chugging riffs during the groups more aggressive moments, while demonstrating their wealth of talented and technical ability during the traditional jazz styled interludes. The bass however takes a bit of a back seat as a whole, with a keen eye set to laying foundations and thickening up the guitar riffs rather than vying for attention, although the lowend contributions are definitely recognizable and do tend to shine with their catchy, plodding loops, especially throughout the hip hop styled breakdowns and rap flavored tracks.

Candiria re-write music conventions with this amazingly strong release. Each member of the band shows their obvious talent, fusing free-from jazz and hip-hop with a metallic hardcore background.
I have found that this release appeals to many different kinds of fans. I am a huge hardcore fan, but my friends (with ranging tastes from heavy rock, punk, hip-hop etc.) love this band as much as anyone.
Similar bands to use as a reference include:
Dillenger Escape Plan, for the crazy time changes and structure;
Neurosis, for the strange sampling and dark atmospherics;
Crowbar, for the massive riffs and harsh vocal style.
Combine those aspects with John Zorn like jazz brass sections and guest rappers with real ability (not rap-metallers) and you might just be able to imagine the brooding insanity of Candiria.

5.0 out of 5 stars Admirable! 5 Mar 2002

Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best metal albums ever made. Candiria successfully blend the awesome power of some the hardest riffs from the hardcore metal scene, Tool's penchant for noise and effects, and the influence of Jazz giant John Coltrane! This creates a hulking slab of music that cannot be likened to anything that has been heard before. Most of the tracks are through composed and there are very few choruses. The song structures are complex and littered with breath taking time changes. The musicians are in a league of their own (especially drummer Ken Schalk) and vocalist Carley Coma has a throat of steel. These unbelievable tracks are complemented by intelligent lyrics that are rapped/screamed in some of the most interesting rhythms I've ever heard. You will find new things that you like every time you hear it and it will very rarely leave your CD player. Buy this album right now!

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this album 30 Nov 2006

Candiria are a band from New York who manage to combine hardcore math metal with jazz fusion, rap, funk and electronica, it is no exageration to say that 300 percent density is one of the most original, inventive and brilliant albums of any genre, ever. Read the other reviews and then buy it, if you have any interest in bands such as Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, Atheist, Cynic etc then your record collection will never be complete until you own this.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good it just isn't even fair... 30 Oct 2004
Format:Audio CD
To be perfectly frank, I feel a sense of mission in writing this. If even just a handful of people choose to venture out and discover what this band has to offer, I will feel I've contributed something to the world of music. I am not exaggerating when I say this: your record collection is not complete without Candiria, one of the most woefully undiscovered bands out there.
Recognize, this is not conventional metal, and it does not digest easily the first few times you listen to it. It is a challenging record and it may take your ears a while to truly get it as mine did, but I tell you the truth...though I didn't digest it all on the first listen, I could tell within five seconds this CD was good. In thirty seconds, I could see it was truly something special. The rythm guitar work in this piece is just a marvel from beginning to end incorporating some of the most unconventional stacatto syncopations out there with a bass groove that weaves in and out yet still always in the pocket with finesse so very rarely witnessed. And the drumming...you just need to hear it. This is not a band that indulges in a great deal of melody (except for the beautiful moments of jazz) because the focus is on the innovation of rythm and that's where the beauty of their experimentation lies. Do your ears and mind a big favor and buy this even if you're not into heavy music. If you fully learn to hear this album, you will be able to better appreciate everything from Beethoven to Clutch. It will make you a smarter listener. This band is so good it just isn't even fair.
