Age and lack of features doesn't make this a bad game, 22 Aug 2003
WCW Nitro is one of the older wrestling games available for PlayStation, and while the game does not have a wide range of features to recommend it today, I have to say that I still quite enjoy playing this game. I would describe the game as the equivalent of a demo version of WCW/NWO Thunder – the look and feel is similar, but a lot of nifty features are not available. There are no weapons available for you to pick up outside the ring, each wrestler is introduced with nothing more than a picture, there's almost no customization options for each wrestler, and about the only vocalizations you hear are the announcers identifying a wrestling move or counting the seconds in a pin attempt. Still, you do get your choice of a wide range of wrestlers, each of which has his own special moves. I can best express my appreciation of this game by describing my experience of playing as the Nature Boy himself, the living legend Ric Flair. One of Flair's trademark moves is the old cheap shot in which he grabs his opponent around the neck, turns around, and delivers a most effective kick to one of his opponent's more sensitive areas. After dishing out a couple of these moves, I can sling my opponent against the ropes and deliver a patented Nature Boy chop across his chest. Once the guy is down and all but out of energy, I can slap the Figure Four Leg Lock on him and make him cry like a baby as he submits. There is nothing like ending a match with the Figure Four. To really be Flair, though, you have to do more than simply beat the other guy to a pulp; you have to strut a little. Before the Figure Four, you can have Flair do a little showboating, and that makes the win all the more satisfying. Once the match is over, Flair does some of the strutting he is famous for and delivers a few Whoos to the crowd. How can this not be fun, no matter how old the game is? There are certainly better wrestling games available these days, but WCW Nitro still manages, despite its several undeniable weaknesses, to deliver some pretty good thrills for this gamer.

Possibly the best "old school" wrestling game around!, 7 Nov 2006
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
You'd think that the pretty slow gameplay, dated graphics, lack of match types and rehashed movesets would render this game pretty much unplayable, but once you get in to the game properly you will realise how great it is. Plus, it's the only game that really catches the feel and atmosphere of WCW (In my opinion).
Gameplay: Like I said the gameplay is kinda slow, at least when compared to the smackdown! series of games. The wrestlers have pretty much the same movesets, but each wrestler does have finishers and signature moves. So Hogan has his leg drop, Sting has the Scorpion Deathdrop Kevin Nash has the Jacknife, etc.
Moves are pulled of using button combinations similar to WWF Attidude. This system seems to work better than in Attitude as A) For the most part, combinations are smaller and B) There are less moves combos to memorize.
There are about 18 wrestlers to start the game with but as you win matches in the tournament mode, you will unlock others.
There are only a few match types. These include Tournament (1p), Single (1p or 2p) and tag team (1p or 2p).
You can also set the time limit, difficulty and ring out time.
Graphics: As far as the wrestlers and the rings go, the graphics aren't really that bad. The wrestlers are very detailed as are the rings and arenas. The only major bad point is the blurry, pixelated crowd.
Sound: The sound is a great part of the game. It features the offical Nitro and nWo themes that play during the menus. There are also some great tracks that play during the matches. Sound effects are great and the commentary, while sparse is also great
If you are in to WCW and old school wrestling games then chances are you'll really enjoy this game. If you are more in to the smackdown! or Day of Reckoning games and prefer varied match types and seaon modes, this game probably isn't for you.
