Manufacturer's Description

Darksiders is a third-person, single player action/adventure game inspired by the characters, themes and mythology of the apocalypse and the battle of Armageddon described by the Book of Revelation. But this modern interpretation is not your run of the mill Sunday school stroll through the New Testament. In the game players take on the role of "War," one of the dread Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But things are not as they were.

Once the unstoppable and just wielder of divine retribution, War is now reduced in stature and cast out amongst the ruined lands of the Earth that he himself devastated. All that remains is the search for the truth behind his betrayal and the survival of its consequences.

The Story
Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War - the first Horseman of the Apocalypse - stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between heaven and hell. Dishonored and stripped of his powers, War must return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible. But there is no clear definition of good and evil in this tale. Hunted by a vengeful group of angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vindication. But the answers he seeks will reveal a deep conspiracy in which War will find, and have to resign himself to the reality that although once the hand of God, he is just a pawn in the eternal battle between heaven and hell.

Gameplay
A mix of exploration and fast-paced action gameplay, Darksiders is based on nonlinear play situations. That means that as War slowly regains his previous powers of destruction and carnage in order to continue his search for the origins and reasons for his betrayal, players will be able to backtrack to areas and scenarios that they may have left unexplored upon first discovery. Almost all areas of the game can be explored and some of the things players will find as they do so are treasure chests, health chests, and bonus life points, etc. The ability to go back and explore areas is important, especially as the game progresses and War finds himself up against enemies whose defeat require special skills and/or weaponry.

As for combat gameplay, Darksiders features a variety of weapons--including blades and firearms--that can be used in combo moves or in single strikes. Some of these can be charged up for quick, but devastating attacks on enemies and all can be arranged on your controller's D-pad for easy and preferred access. Additional gameplay elements include the ability/necessity to fight from the back of your mount, Ruin, and the collection of the souls in the form of glowing orbs that fall to the ground as enemies are dispatched. The latter can be used to level up War with new items and abilities.

Varied Characters and Environments
Although players take on the imposing role or War, Darksiders also contains a wide variety of equally intriguing and sometimes frightening characters. These include: an assortment of vengeful angels; demons, such as "the Jailer" whose body is made up of the remains of countless cadavers; a bestiary of wicked and vile creatures created to bolster the armies of hell on Earth; and Ruin, the trusty steed of War. Gameplay environments players will experience are equally varied, and include areas both underground and on the surface, that call to mind both familiar, if ruined modern urban environments, as well as ones seemingly pulled from the nightmarish scenes of the biblical apocalypse.

Key Features

  • Apocalyptic Power of War - Unleash the wrath of War, combining brutal attacks and supernatural abilities to decimate all who stand in your way.
  • Extreme Arsenal - Wield a devastating arsenal of angelic, demonic, and Earthly weapons, and blaze a trail of destruction atop Ruin, War's fiery phantom steed.
  • Epic Quest - Battle across the wastelands and demon-infested dungeons of the decimated Earth in your quest for vengeance and redemption.
  • Character Progression - Uncover powerful ancient relics, upgrade your weapons, unlock new abilities, and customize your gameplay style.
  • Battle Heaven and Hell - Battle against all who stand in your way—from war-weary angelic forces to hell's hideous demon hordes.
  • Weapons and Gear - Darksiders features an extensive arsenal and inventory of weapons and gear.
  • Varied Play Environments - Players will fight through varied environments, including those above and underground, and modern and nightmarishly mythical in design.
  • PlayStation Network - Although a single player game, Darksiders features PlayStation Network Trophy support and other features to heighten the gameplay experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars GUTS AND GLORY? 14 Jan 2010
Platform for Display:PLAYSTATION 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Darksider, or the legend of Zel-gore as my friends have started calling it, is a deceptive little title that a demo could do little to show off all it has to offer. Right, I'm no fan of paragraphs of babble so I'm gonna break it down into a list of pros and cons that'll hopefully aid you in your buying decision in fun size, easily digestible chunks. So here goes:

THE GOOD STUFF:
- Fantastically well planned out level designs and dungeons that'll bring a smile to your face in between the very tiny amounts of enjoyable head scratching (as is typical of the action RPG genre).
- The shear amount of fantastic weapons and gadgets you'll end up using cover so many bases as far as movement, transportation and offence are concerned that you'll wonder how they implemented so much (and so well) in such a tidy package - what many games (such as dark sector for one) use as their whole basis and main gimmick is just one of many, many elements that Darksiders has on offer.
- The character models are big and extremely well designed and implemented (due in no small amount I'll wager to the extreme artistic talents of Joe `Battle Chasers' Madureira) and look cool, brutal and awesome in equally magnificent portions.
- The voice acting is cool as a cucumber.
- The environments are magnificent and contain some really nice touches such as sulphuric burning air flowing from pits of lava, souls rising from the fetid earth and newspapers blowing in the wind and all of this adds to the atmosphere which is already in abundance.
- Back to the character models: the bosses and some of the more behemoth sized characters give you a sense of awe not seen in many titles and are all animated with aplomb.
- The weapon levelling up system is smooth and gives a nice sense of progression when coupled with the constant power ups and weapons that head your way.
- The camera is your friend and rarely gets on your nerves.
- The story, although not the deepest, is full of intrigue and crafty daemons that'll keep you hooked till the conclusion.
- War is a great character and has a real `heavy metal' style to him that gives you an immense sense of power without sacrificing movement.
- The fighting is hugely gruesome and intensely satisfying, death moves are a simple process and consist of one button but many enemies have some really nice patterns that'll give you some problems before you get to press that bloody circle.
- There are tons of hidden and hard to reach chests to find that are filled with more than just health - dang I want me that abyssal armour!
- A decent length adventure.

THE BAD STUFF:
- If you've ever completed an action RPG or two such a Zelda or some of the better `Mana' games this will not pose half as much of a challenge as it would to a newcomer - solution? Stick that difficulty right up there.
- Although there are weapons and cool tools in abundance none of them you haven't seen a good few times before: however the game more than makes up for this by combining all these elements and doing them all extremely, extremely well. As I've said before just one or two of War's weapons are normally the whole gimmick or novelty many games out there where as Darksiders has it all.
- The angels, to me at least, aren't half as inspired as most of demons.
- The dash button could have done with a nice sprint counterpart - unless you've got your stead it can feel like a bit of a chore getting around the expansive wastelands at times.
- There is a lot of backtracking to stretch out the games length with is a bit of a cardinal gaming sin and not to mention darn cheeky. Thankfully the good outweighs this annoyance.
- The first hour of the game would lead you to think this was just another god of war rip off - and not a massively impressive one, this game is all about the new weapons and dungeons and they're a little too out of reach at the start of the game.
- Most puzzles are a touch on the easy side - but all are good and often quite inventive.
- Some of the death moves get a little old and after seeing them over and over again you'll wish there had been a few per enemy - however with all that`s on offer this is a seriously small niggle and, fortunately, niggles are all I have left so let's get on with the conclusion for this badboy!

CONCLUSION:
A great action RPG with some very smart level and dungeon designs and brilliant characters. The story is gripping (although not massively deep) and engaging plus, to top all this this ,you've got loads of gadgets, weapons and awesome looking offensive goodness! There are problems, no doubt, but none are fundamental or game breaking, or even that annoying so I give this monster a solid 4 out of 5 and an award for best Zelda rip off since Golden Axe Warrior! Recommended to buy or a good long rental!

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
before i even start this review, i have to point out that im not the best game-player. im a 50 year old woman, not a 15 year old boy. im not interested in collecting every bit of treasure, executing every combo or playing in the hardest mode. i have a very hard job, and i find the gore and slaughter cathartic, but i also love a good puzzle, and while i cant deny, i have looked up ign guides in moments of frustration, i always play without a walkthrough, and just see where it takes me. this is possibly the longest, and most fun game ive played...way longer than any god of war, dantes inferno, lara or prince of persia, and while it has its frustrations, i really love it. here are my cons and pros.
cons
1. you will spend an inordinate amount of time running around, particularly in the ashlands, not really sure what the hell you are meant to be doing. i dont really mind this, but if you are 15 and want to get the game over then it must be frustrating.
2. war doesnt jump particularly well, and you will plummet to your death loads of times if you have just played kratos.
3. the last battle with the destroyer..i did it first time. im sorry that just isnt hard enough! some last battles are just annoyingly difficult, and if you replay you just cant be bothered with them...but this was a doddle!
4. i found the changing between certain weapons, and particularly with the shadow mask a bit of a pain..he would bring out the horn when you wanted the grapple..or is that just me!
5. the first time i played it, it took 45 hours!
6. darksiders as a title is gash!
pros
1. the first time i played it, it took 45 hours..the third time, 21!
2. i loved the timed trials he had to do...god that got my heart pumping! actually i found them some of the most difficult bits in the game..what larks! especially killing the enemies with environmental weapons..that means smashing 30 bastards with old cars in 1 minute. bloody magic! that is, if you can even find where the portals are to do so!
3. usually the fights involve 3 waves of, increasingly hard, enemies...but there is one in which there are 5..it took me a while to slaughter them all, but the feeling of achievement was overwhelming!
4. i kinda like the fact that you have to kill all the waves of enemies in a oner...or you have to go back the the beginning and start over...i know this is old ps1 and ps2 games..but the challenge is bigger.
5.the puzzles can be annoying, and many of the reviews slag the middle part of the game for them...but i loved them. if throwing lines of bombs, and igniting them with torches down a corridor, or redirecting light beams through, and between 2 huge buildings seems exciting to you, then i suggest you buy this.
6. its a huge game, and you can lose yourself, and your trivial working life, that you have to have in order to buy these games, in it. the graphics are just brilliant..distopian world vs biblical mythology. two of my favourites!
7. its really good fun..just dont let your neighbours hear you screaming 'just pick up the bomb and throw it...for gods sake..just throw it..oh, well...dead again!'

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! 29 May 2010

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game was brilliant. Just finished it on Normal this morning after 22 hours of play and have just started playing it again on apocalyptic difficulty.
The game caught me by surprise as I did not initially enjoy it. I felt the graphics were too comic-like but after a couple of hours was hooked.
I won't go on too much but I highly recommend this game - buy it, rent it, etc - just make sure you play it.
Fantastic open world - great animation and graphics - great battles and puzzles - interesting upgrades!!!

Would give it a 4.8 out of 5.

Wish they had created some DLC or extras to keep the game play going.
Thats it for now.
