Dark Summit also has a bit of a storyline (a bit of a cheesy one, but it reflects in the game surprisingly well). Basically strange things have been happening on the summit of Mount Garrick and an unfriendly group of military are keeping everyone off the slopes - but you're not going to put up with that. You've been tasked by your "Charlies Angels"-style boss to find out what is happening on Mt. Garrick.
Plotline aside, this IS still a snowboarding game, but while you career down a snowy mountain there are loudspeakers dotted here and there shouting at you to keep off the mountain. Also now and again the snow patrol will try and take you out.
Graphics: Gorgeous, smooth-moving and colourful.
Sounds: Also very good. Your character's comments are far from annoying each time you complete a mission, trick or end up face-down in the white stuff. The eerie echo when a loudspeaker or fellow skiier (or 'boarder) shouts at you is actually excellent, making you feel very alone on the mountain (yet not quite alone!)
Playability: A good range of tricks to master, yet which are easy to pull off for the novice (like me!) You can also 'collect' special tricks from various points on the slopes. Your character's movements are also smooth, and you don't seem to 'stick' to surfaces like you tend to do in Jonny Moseley Mad Trix or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Linking tricks together is also easy and you are rewarded with your efforts well.
Lastability: Although there are only four slopes, each one lasts a long enough time, with a nice variety of things to grind/jump off/knock over/avoid. The good thing about Dark Summit is that you can complete sub-missions at your own pace. With Moseley or Hawks you tend to find that your missions are laid out for you and you MUST learn the skills to defeat each level. Summit allows you to choose (loosely) which missions you want to attempt. And you can still build up cash by doing your own stunts at any time - spending this cash will get you a new board or new outfits.
Overall: addictive, good-looking, good-sounding, non-frustrating (sometimes eerie) fun! At the prices you can pick this game up for, it's a must-buy!
Verdict:
UPPERS
-New brilliant idea in stale genre!
-Wide range of tricks!
-Courses are massive!
-Tidy looking graphics!
Downers:
-Can seem aimless at times.
-Occasional scenery pop up.
-Two-player mode is rubbish(sorry, but it is!)
-A measly 4 tracks.
Overall Results:
Graphics = Fast, smooth, but lacking in sparkle:7/10
Sound = Voices soon begin to get on your nerves: 6/10
Lifespan = Dozens of missions provide long challenge! : 9/10
