4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, 1 Aug 2009

This review is from: Blood Bowl (PSP) (Video Game)
I have been playing blood bowl the tabletop game for years. I managed to get hold of blood bowl game for psp in France (they got them in July)

Having not seen the PC version, I cannot compare, but it really feels like the PSP version is a water down version of the PC game.

The positive:

1) it is blood bowl.

2) you can play with some of the more famous teams in blood bowl (only in one-off game though) such as the lustria croakers, the lowdown rats, the orcland raiders. They have players with some serious skills.

3) the hot seat option (1 psp, 2 players) is a neat option to play with people who do not have the game. But this is a one-off game option.

4) The tutorial is okay, there is also a lot of written info on blood bowl rules. I highly recommend anyone wishing to purchase this who is NOT familiar with blood bowl to download the rules on the "games-workshop" website and read. Much better explained.

The negatives:

1) The different format (campaign and competition) don't seem to offer much difference. They are just league formats with two different name.

2) the graphics are actually VERY pixaleted (especially when you get upclose and personal), and it can be hard to see if one of your opponent is down or not.

3) the kicking and receiving formation can be edited, but cannot be saved. This will become very irritating as you try to move your players around in 2.30 minutes.

4) The AI in easy is a bit dumb. Dodging an Ogre out of a kroxigor tackle zone on turn 1 is a bit dumb.

5) The AI always "go for it", which is a real change from live players who play safer. This can be annoying (suddenly all dwarves move 6) but it means that almost every turn, the AI will finish its turn on a turnover.

6) All the games (campaign and competitions) have a 4:00 min turn limit. Only in the one-off games can you change the timing.

7) The options for inducement, hiring mercenaries, or looking at your opponent roster are ONLY available if you put some money in your inducement pot. If that money is not used, it will disappear.

8) There is no scene after your player has scored/killed or intercepted. I would have liked something there.

All in all, it can be a clunky to navigate the game. There seems to be an awful lot of material in this game, but it is hidden and one just seem to stumble on it by accident.

Graphic wise, it feels like a PC game that is running on an old computer. Very blocky.

I give it a 4/5. Not THE blood bowl game that I was waiting for the PSP, but a good one nonetheless.

I have not tried the multiplayer/network.

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Programming Flaws Render it UNPLAYABLE, 20 Nov 2009

This review is from: Blood Bowl (PSP) (Video Game)
You know what you are getting with Blood Bowl. This review is to serve as a warning regarding the save system, not to review the game, which is average.

It has been ADMITTED BY THE DEVELOPERS that is simply DOES NOT WORK AS INTENDED.

The saves corrupt with frankly alarming frequency, meaning the whole team progression is rendered useless.

They have issued a statement I believe on their site allowing you to send them defective UMDs for newer editions that work, so please ignore the other review telling you there is no issue with saving.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice game, could have been better!, 4 Mar 2010

Blood Bowl is a sports game (in a lose sense of the word) based around the Warhammer 40,000 Universe.

Basically, you choose a race, create a team, and battle it out in mini-leagues until you get to contest the "blood bowl". To most of the world, it is a bit like American Football. To American's it is probably nothing like it The races all have their own advantages and disadvantages. The Orc's tend to be stronger and play a "bashing" type game, whereas teams like the Elves are great passers of the ball (by throwing). And there are lots of teams in between.

So how is the PSP version?

Well, the sound is nothing special. Some rather forgetful elevator type music, and the grunts and groans of battle. Still, it does the job. The graphics are a let down. The game was also released on the DS, and it seems like they didn't put too much extra effort into the PSP version. The opening sequence is great, but the rest range from poor to forgettable. The PC has the ability to customise the players, there is none of that. In fact, one team will always play in red, and one team will always play in blue. You can at least control the camera (rotate, zoom) which is nice.

Given that the rules behind the game can't really change (it is based on the official Blood Bowl rules), they could have at least put some effort into presentation.

Multiplayer is ad hoc only, which is no real surprise. I haven't had a chance to try this out, so can't comment too much.

Despite the poor graphics, basic sound, and lack of features, it is actually quite a lot of fun to play. I normally play the Orc's, and it is great fun to literally beat the opposition off the park Gang fouls are all part of the rules (although you may get a player sent off unless you bribe the ref), and gaining numerical superiority is a huge advantage if you can do it. It is also nice to ensure that they oppositions skilled player, who just ran past three of your players to score, isn't going to get another chance The game is turn based, and forms two halves of eight "turnovers" (you lose the ball, score a touchdown, get a player sent off, fail a pickup of a lose ball etc, all counts as a turnover).

Your players will also get awarded SPP points during a match (rewards for actions such as successfully making a throw, injuring the opposition, scoring a touchdown etc), and these can be used to gain additional skills for your players. The list of skills is thorough.

The implementation of the rules is certainly well done.

Overall

If you are fan of Blood Bowl, this is a game for you. If you are unfamiliar with it, it might be worth a punt but only at a discount.

At a guess, I think those familiar with American Football might find it less appealing since it is shares some similarity, but it certainly isn't the same.
