Product Description

Product Description

Thorium energy can help us check CO2 and global warming, cut deadly air pollution, provide inexhaustible energy, and increase human prosperity. Our world is beset by global warming, pollution, resource conflicts, and energy poverty. Millions die from coal plant emissions. We war over mideast oil. Food supplies from sea and land are threatened. Developing nations' growth exacerbates the crises. Few nations will adopt carbon taxes or energy policies against their economic self-interests to reduce global CO2 emissions. Energy cheaper than coal will dissuade all nations from burning coal. Innovative thorium energy uses economic persuasion to end the pollution, to provide energy and prosperity to impoverished peoples, and to create energy security for all people for all time.

About the Author

Robert Hargraves has written articles and made presentations about the liquid fluoride thorium reactor and energy cheaper than from coal - the only realistic way to dissuade nations from burning fossil fuels. His presentation "Aim High" about the technology and social benefits of the liquid fluoride thorium reactor has been presented to audiences at Dartmouth ILEAD, Thayer School of Engineering, Brown University, Columbia Earth Institute, Williams College, Royal Institution, the Thorium Energy Alliance, the International Thorium Energy Association, Google, the American Nuclear Society, the President's Blue Ribbon Commission of America's Nuclear Future, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With coauthor Ralph Moir he has written articles for the American Physical Society Forum on Physics and Society: Liquid Fuel Nuclear Reactors (Jan 2011) and American Scientist: Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors (July 2010). Robert Hargraves is a study leader for energy policy at Dartmouth ILEAD. He was chief information officer at Boston Scientific Corporation and previously a senior consultant with Arthur D. Little. He founded a computer software firm, DTSS Incorporated while at Dartmouth College where he was assistant professor of mathematics and associate director of the computation center. He graduated from Brown University (PhD Physics 1967) and Dartmouth College (AB Mathematics and Physics 1961).

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ 7 Dec 2012
By J
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
All engineers, environmentalists and politicians need to read this book.
It sets out all the main energy options (including fossil fuels, renewables and various nuclear) clearly and concisely.
It also deals with energy storage and synthesising liquid fuels including ammonia for transport.
I really enjoyed reading this book.

It prompted me to write a letter to The Times (UK):

"As an engineer and long standing environmental campaigner I now conclude that it is wholly unrealistic to expect people to pay for the true costs of power generation based on renewables. A huge amount of energy storage would be required to cope with intermittent generation. The enormous costs and inefficiencies of this are rarely accounted for.

The only realistic options for tackling climate change are nuclear. A growing body of engineers and environmental campaigners are realising that there are many different nuclear options that could be developed. It is now possible to come close to eliminating long lived radioactive waste using inherently very safe technologies with virtually no risk of nuclear weapons proliferation.

Perhaps the best reactor designs use molten rather than solid fuel, abundant cheap thorium rather than enriched uranium. If you want to know more, search: "liquid fluoride thorium reactor" (LFTR) . If you are a policy maker in the fields or energy, environment or economics I would urge you please to read: "Thorium: Energy Cheaper Than Coal" by R. Hargraves (an informative overview)."

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on a promising technology 8 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the first review I've written on Amazon despite shopping on here for more than 10 years. I felt I had to give this book a positive review given how serious the energy problems facing our planet are, especially given the pollution caused by the burning of Fossil Fuels.

I concur with J's review that politicians, policy makers, economists and indeed pretty much everyone needs to read this. It will open your eyes to the possibilities that are right in front of us. A Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor was prototyped and run in the 60s at Oak Ridge National Labs, so this isn't a fantasy paper technology - it's a solution we can have today, if given funding and attention.

There's a lot of information in the book, with an astonishing number of references and citations, but it's all presented in a very easy and enjoyable to read format. There were some minor typo's in the book, but this may just be in the Kindle version, and in no way detracts from its important message.

This is a must read for people who are concerned with climate change and wish to understand what options are available to combat the deteriorating world climate. Dr. Robert Hargraves discusses the many energy options available and explains why it is critical that the correct energy policies are chosen to avoid a collapse in the civilized world.

A clear concise and understandable book for the uninitiated in global warming and energy policy .In particular it avoids emotional statements and takes the reader through the economic arguments for alternative sources of energy with enough numbers for the reader to make sense of what is being said without bogging down in the detail or getting lost in nuclear theory .
Based mostly on US costs and figures (simply because the is where most of the data is available ) it is equally relevant to all of us .
Vital if you wish to have an intelligent argument on the subject and a perfect platform to get stuck in and contribute if you want more .
Overall the first time I have seen the possibility of a real and economically viable answer rather than endless doom and gloom with no solution in sight.
There will be a lot of opposition from the existing players (all energy suppliers including current nuclear players ) because these proposals really could change the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard selling of a hard-hitting subject 27 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
No matter how important the issue, I would always rather read a well-reasoned argument than a sales pitch. Nevertheless, the facts are presented coherently and make a compelling case for the development of Thorium nuclear energy. Definitely worth the read if you are a non- scientist, but it will drive scientists mad!
