Majestic continuation of this splendid trilogy,
By A Customer
This review is from: THEY WERE DIVIDED (The writing on the wall) (Paperback)
This elegant masterpiece celebrates the last years of Transylvanian aristocratic life before world war 1. It tells the story of the love between Adrienne and Balint against a background of growing ethnic and international tension. The author's anguish at the end of the civilisation he loved is hidden behind his sensuous reconstruction of social life in great houses, by the beauty of the Carpathian mountains to which the lovers briefly escape, and by the comic relief provided by rural life in all social classes. Trollope meets Proust.

Eminently readable,
By Queen Margo "Buttercup" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: THEY WERE DIVIDED (The writing on the wall) (Paperback)
This is the third part of Banffy's Hungarian trilogy. All three books are just excellent and eminently readable. There are no boring parts. The book is, sort of, the Hungarian Gone With the Wind, covering the years before World War Two. It will be of interest to anyone who likes classic European literature and has any interest in Eastern Europe. For more details read reviews for the first part of the trilogy, "They Were Counted."
