Biography

Biography by Richie Unterberger

Aside from the Beatles and perhaps the Beach Boys, no mid-'60s rock group wrote melodies as gorgeous as those of the Zombies. Dominated by Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals, choral backup harmonies, and Rod Argent's shining jazz- and classical-influenced organ and piano, the band sounded utterly unique for their era. Indeed, their material -- ... Read more in Amazon's The Zombies Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Their Odessey and Oracle is considered a pop classic, but unfortunately the Zombies had disbanded by the record's 1968 release. Four decades later, eternal versions of that album's "This Will Be Our Year," "A Rose for Emily," "Beechwood Park," "Care of Cell 44," and "Time of the Season" make this 25-song live reunion of founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent worth the effort. Though no other Zombie was aboard for the 2004 project (including underrated guitarist/vocalist Chris White), Argent's burning keyboards, Blunstone's inimitable voice, and skilled backing musicians assure that the entire band receives its due, particularly on the Odessey selections and nuggets from the singles collection, including Argent's "Tell Her No" and "Indication," Blunstone's "Just Out of Reach," and White's "I Love You." The harmonic backing vocals that littered the Zombies catalog are astoundingly intact, with only the occasional ramble into Argent's eponymous post-Zombies band (remember "Hold Your Head Up"?) left to clutter the sequencing. (A 16-song DVD of performances from the Bloomsbury Theatre show is also available, including multiple camera angles, immaculate sound, and four of the CD's five Odessey and Oracle numbers.) --Scott Holter

5.0 out of 5 stars Master Craftsmen 16 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD
Live recordings are,in my experience, seldom as good as studio based efforts. The atmosphere never compares to the live gig and the sound quality is inferior.

This C.D. proves to be the exception to the rule, and not suprisingly, because in Colin Blunstone and Road Argent we have two master craftsmen whos talent has not diminished one iota in over 40 years. It is hard to comprehend that the youthful voice and incredible keyboard skills of the two principals have been with us since the early 1960's.

Great songs.Wonderful singing and outstanding musicianship.
Talent is permanent and ageless.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Live Album! 30 Mar 2005
By Tonty
Format:Audio CD
I'm not usually a fan of live albums. You put them on and from the start you get endless cheering and clapping until the artist comes on then you get some inane chat between tracks - which means having to turn the volume up to hear what's being said, then turn it down again when the music starts...........
Not with this album! This is all music, all the way through....no chat!
Classic Zombies tracks played perfectly (can this really be live?!), Colin Blunstone singing Argent classics - Hold Your Head Up & God Gave Rock n Roll To You - totally awesome! Some of the best of Colin's solo material played to perfection - Misty Roses with a string quartet - beautiful!
The band: Colin, Rod Argent, Jim & Steve Rodford and Keith Aiery sound fresh, exciting and their enthusiasm shines through.
The sound quality is one of the best I've ever heard on a live album. It really deserves a 10 star rating!

5.0 out of 5 stars MANY DECADES OF GREAT MUSIC 22 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
THE BEST THING ABOUT SEEING THE ZOMBIES LIVE, AND I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO CATCH THEM TWICE IN THE LAST 3 YEARS, IS THAT ONE IS SEEING NOT ONLY A ZOMBIES SHOW, BUT , ALSO COLIN BLUNSTONE AND ARGENT SHOW. THIS IS NOT TO SAY YOU'LL SEE A NOSTALGIA CONCERT. THE NEW ZOMBIE MUSIC, NO MATTER WHAT YOU READ, IS FANTASTIC. TOO BAD SOME CRITICS CAN'T GET OVER THE FACT THAT THESE GUYS AREN'T 18 YEAR OLD SCHOOLBOYS ANYMORE PRODUCING THE SAME MUSIC THEY WERE IN '65. GUESS WHAT GUYS, PEOPLE GROW UP, THINGS CHANGE. IF ONE ACCEPTS THIS DISC FOR WHAT IT IS, FORGET THE CRITICS, YOU'LL DISCOVER MANY DECADES OF AMAZING MUSIC ROLLED INTO ONE MAGICAL RECORDING. I HAVE GONE TO ZOMBIES CONCERTS WITH PEOPLE WHO JUST WENT FOR THE HELL OF IT...THEY LOVED IT. WOULD DEFINITELY SEE THEM AGAIN. OTHERS HAVE SAID IT WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS THEY HAVE EVER SEEN...I AGREE. HAVING SEEN THE WHO, STONES, ROD STEWART, PINK FLOYD , JEFF BECK, ETC...THEY STILL RATE IN THE TOP 5. BUY THIS RECORD AND FIND OUT WHAT I AND OTHERS ARE SAYING. I GUARANTEE, IF YOU RESPECT QUALITY MUSIC, YOU'LL LOVE IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treat from Start to Finish! 10 Sep 2008
Format:Audio CD
Another gem from the reunited team of Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent. In the 2 discs there is a rich array of songs covering the beginning of the Zombies, followed by the subequent solo careers of Colin Blunstone, and Rod Argent with his hugely successful progressive rock band Argent. I found it hard to resist buying this cd when I saw the track listing. I have always loved "Andorra", and once again the live version is the best. The song "Mystified" was enough to make me want to jump out of my seat and dance along with it right there.
"I Want to Fly", a favourite of mine from "As Far As I Can See" is here in all its glory, no matter how many times I hear it I get misty eyed. One of my wishes is to hear Rod and Colin do this song live, even if I have to come back to London to hear it!
The 1st disc finishes with "Keep On Rolling" and "Hold Your Head Up", the Argent classics, which again, I never get tired of hearing.
On disc 2 it is another rich feast for the ears. With the opening track, "Sanctuary" we are taken down the path of musical history that only these men can take you. Continuing on with Pleasure", and the songs from Colin's wonderful solo album "One Year"; we have "Say You Don't Mind" and "Misty Roses" with a string quartet. For some reason, every time I hear the beginnings of the live version of "Old and Wise" I have to catch my breath. This song has been with me for so long and hearing it again is like getting reaquainted with an old friend.
In all honesty, that is what rediscovering this band has been for me in many ways. When the last song comes on, the Gershwin classic "Summertime" from "Porgy and Bess" you will no doubt feel like no one else can possibly do a finer remake of this classic song.
What does this say? These guys are the real deal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band 5 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
Having recently seen the band live, I can say they are still a fabulous vibrant band. Contrary to the previous review, Keith Airey is an amazing guitarist - but wasn't at his best on this particular album I think. Perhaps a case of trying too hard?

Well worth getting, and the DVD too!

Not only did mans journey into space peak between 1969 and 1972 during which the 12 (only what ? 8 left alive) men who walked on the moon did their stuff : music also peaked during those years. The rest is just winding down and fiddling about. 15 2 hours ago
