Product Description

The mysterious letter invited him to an interview for a job he'd never applied for. But at 37, his family life and medical career in ruins, Dr Mark Avedissian wasn't feeling like asking too many questions.

Nor, it turned out, were British Intelligence, Avedissian's new employers, prepared to give many answers about his new role in their battle against terrorism. With minimal information they despatched him to America in the company of Kathleen, the sister of an IRA man Martin O'Neill, their brief to rescue a small boy, a child with a terrible destiny.

But in the turbulent events that followed, in the transatlantic struggle for the freedom of Ireland, British Intelligence proved to be every bit as ruthless as the IRA, and Avedissian and Kathleen dispensible pawns in a game that veered rapidly out of control . . .

Ken McClure is the internationally bestselling author of over twenty medical thrillers such as The Lazarus Strain, The Gulf Conspiracy, White Death and Dust to Dust. His books have been translated into twenty-three languages and he has earned a reputation for the accuracy of his predicitions. I have read and really enjoyed other books by Mr McClure, but hadn't read any of his much earlier works (this one from 1988 under the name of Begg I understand).

This is a tale of the time. It brought back to me the dreadful period from the early 1970's where the war in Northern Ireland was a daily news item. This is a story of duplicity, betrayal, double cross and a touch of redemption. It's a fast paced thriller, with a complex plot involving deals and double deals, leaving the reader unsure as to who they should be rooting for. The main protagonist is an unusual character for whom I had some empathy. He's had a troubled past and ends up working for the security services, but nothing is straightforward. Mr McClure's prose keeps the story moving along well. There are some nailbiting scenes involving chase and a really fast paced race against time to the final denoument.

I have only one slight reservation and that was the speed at which a relationship developed between two of the characters. I won't say more as I don't want to ruin the story and it certinly didn't spoil my enjoyment overall. Just made the difference between 4 or 5 star. All in all, a great and gripping read.

I came across this book, purely by accident, as i had never heard of this author.
The story has many twist and tales to keep you turning the pages, and takes you to different locations.
I enjoyed the book so much i have now read three other books by Ken McClure, which have all been very good reads. I would recommend this author to anyone who enjoys a good Thriller.

A page turner 24 May 2012

I got this book for a steal on a Kindle promotion (and may have enjoyed it more because of this!). I thought it was enjoyable, easy holiday reading with an interesting plot. Characterisation is a little limited but enough for you to empathise with the main character Avedissian. It is a little flawed in plot and sometimes clunky in passages, I cringed a few times. I feel a bit of judicious editing could have sorted that out.

It's not great writing but it's definitely compelling, and there are lots of twists and turns to keep you reading right to the end.

The promotional price did the trick and after this "taster" I'll certainly be buying a few more McClure book for my holidays.

[Incidentally, the kindle edition has a quite a few minor errors in it (missing quote marks, line breaks gone wrong, spaces missing between words etc) nothing serious, but the publisher might try to fix it for a new edition.]
