Biography

‘I wanted to pay homage to our musical heritage,’ says a reflective Vieux Farka Touré. Being that his native Mali has been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012, his new album, Mon Pays (Six Degrees Records), is devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his homeland.

Already a collection by the finest of the current stock of African musicians. I like the way that Vieux has not tried to emulate his famous father, deciding instead to combine haunting and hypnotic Malian rhythmns with blues and reggae influences. If you are lucky enough at some time to catch a live performance by him, I can almost guarantee that it will remain as a treasured memory. He recently closed Shambala festival, where the vast majority of the audience were young, hardcore dance fans. Almost to a man they were completely blown away. There is a tangible aura of pure joy to what he does, combine this with virtuoso guitar playing, the tightest of rhythmn sections and you have a recipe for long-term success, which is exactly what I wish him for the future.

This album is Vieux's best to date (which is saying a lot) and should get the nod for this year's world music grammy. He is absolutely the best creative and virtuosic guitarist in West Africa today. Incredible collabs with Derek Trucks, Scofield and Dave Matthews. Hats off - brilliant work!!

This is my Album Of The Year if "albums" aren't extinct. # 2 is Ron Sexsmith and # 3 is Burzum so I must have a broad taste in music. But I just can't stop playing this.
Obviously, it's African music but he ropes in some Western musicians and it really works. I don't know why but it reminds me of the late 60s when every band was getting it together in the country. The music just flows and elevates me...
I'll get me coat!

This collection by Vieux Farka Toure is an outstanding example of music from Mali. You can hear vieux's roots in his fathers music here and some wonderful additions via both re-interpretation and exploration to the canon of african music. Not to be missed.

Awesome 10 Jun. 2012

I partly had to review this just because of the one star rating the other person gave. I love this album. It is one of those albums I can listen to over and over again without getting bored with it. There are some great guest artist also such as Derek Trucks and also the guitarist from Soulive.

Love this 31 Oct. 2012
By Ahs Borngren - Published on Amazon.com

This is beautiful, undescribeable music, performed from the heart and that you'll feel in your own heart, if you're tuned in that way. In the US we are accustomed to music being categorized, to falling within a particular (although ambiguous) set of parameters in order to appeal to various radio audiences. This music simultaneously defies and dissolves boundaries and belongs in the category of 'beautiful, heart-felt, uncategorizeable music', the appeal of which some will embrace immediately and which will spread exponentially as we continue to wake up to the profundity of life on planet Earth. Warning: listening to it through your heart may awaken you from your slumber, if only for a moment.

Share The Secret 1 Aug. 2011

This is a CD for a hot afternoon, well, or a nippy fall morning.... Maybe even for a snowy night. I bought this after a feature on NPR, and was even more pleased than I'd hoped I'd be. It's a smoothie using rhythms reminiscent of camel rides on the Sahara with generous handfuls of crunchy guitars, and luscious nips of other instruments, but never dribbling out of African music into the puddle of elevator music. Metaphors aside, it's a really pleasant, keep-me-moving CD that I'm delighted to recommend as an addition to your international music stash.

Talented? 18 April 2012
By Aritza - Published on Amazon.com
This album is so bad, it's pathetic. Repetitive, unimaginative like you can't imagine. One would have hoped for something much better from someone related to Ali Farka Touré. Same thing with the other WFT album I've listened to, Fondo. How can anything coming out of Mali be so insipid. On the other hand, I just went to see WFT last weekend (Somerville Theater) where he played together with Idan Raichel, an Israeli pop musician, and was very pleasantly surprised. I can definitely recommend that album: The Touré-Raichel Collective: The Tel Aviv Session. I can't explain the difference. I wish someone could explain to me how an uninspired, wannabe, but well-connected, guitar player from Mali together with an Israeli pop musician can play such beautiful music.
