The many negative reviews seem unfair for this movie and are probably a result of expectations for a horror film (I found it while looking for new horror releases as this film seems to have been lumped in among them). The cover picture is misleading as well.
This is an atmospheric, suspenseful, melancholy film with touches of comedy. It has more in common with The Machinist or David Lynch movies than it does with any horror/thriller.

The main story involves a young woman house-sitting for a couple who are travelling to Europe. She is soon joined by her brother and her never-do-well boyfriend and gradually they are all affected by the peculiar atmosphere in the house. When the boyfriend kidnaps a child from the mall, things start to come to a head. In the meantime we see how the homeowners are also affected by a similar malaise during their trip and we also find out about the past events that led to all this.

The plot moves at a leisurely pace with seemingly unrelated events taking place at different points in time but I didn't find it terribly complicated and all the strands do come together. The ending is inconclusive and may not appeal to people who want every loose end tied up. I thought the acting was convincing and we learn a lot about the characters as the story evolves. The imagery, music and ambiance are wonderful and very appropriate to the tone of the story.

All in all, this was a film I enjoyed and have watched again. Don't be put off by the bad reviews and misleading marketing, the film is worth seeing!

Firstly, definitely don't be put off by the other reviews here, I nearly was.
To start this seems fairly generic and the acting , at first, fairly mediocre. My main reason for watching was to see what the wonderful RJ Mitte has been up to since the inimitable Breaking Bad (In which he plays Walt Jnr)
This really is a maze of a film and needs to be watched with full attention as so many parts are fundamental to the plot. There are themes that tie together very gradually throughout. A plot of houses built on a former golf course, one that demands to be played upon still, a tragedy tied in with the golf obsession that only serves to see tragedy played over and over like a record on repeat.
RJ Mitte's acting is on par throughout, awkward, eerie, and the other main characters begin to become more fleshed out. Everything feels slightly off creating a really ominous and sometimes almost unbearably tense atmosphere. There were some visual moments that felt very Lynch-esque in this.
Watch as the story slowly unravels amongst characters and surroundings that will make you feel as though you can't wake up from a bad dream. This isn't a film that is served up ready to be interpreted readily and easily but one that weaves inside the mind intriguingly.
Well worth seeing.

It's watchable, certainly not what I could call a horror

Difficult to get into , but eventually understood what the film was about, not great acting, trying to copy the shining, but don't quite pull it off. You have to sit the whole film out , and not be easily bored.

This was done a lot better in the Shining. Found the plot erratic and disjointed.

Quite possibly the worst film ever made. Confusing, no real plot, rubbish acting. And what was the golf course all about, really? The cover bears no relation to the film. Don't waste your money buying this.
