Product Description

1987. The morning after the Great Storm. A letter drops through the door of Jess Whitelaw's London flat and sets her on a journey through the Australian Outback and her own damaged psyche.

In the heat and dust of the Northern Territory, Jess’s protective armour is chipped away as painful truths are revealed. Tension builds like thunderheads heralding the start of the Wet.

Will Jess be able to come to terms with the guilt she feels? Will she ever learn that the past is not so terrifying when looked at the right way?

A glorious novel, evocative of Australia from its opening descriptions. This is a troubled Western woman's story combined with a wonderfully sympathetic view of the vanishing Aboriginal way of life. Healer Rose is an especial triumph. This book has mystery, passion and wisdom rolled into one. Barbara Scott-Emmett's characterisation and spirit of place left me flabbergasted. Already very visual inside the reader's head, this would translate to the screen superbly.

With Jessice Whitelaw we enter a world about which many of us know very little. Maybe we can identify better with Jessica's world; a lonely life in a city where psychobabble and arrogance are paramount. However, a death calls Jessica to a place she thought she had left for good, a place that has become unrecognisable, and Jessica is the catalyst of this change. We go with Jessica into a strange, hardly discovered land in an e-book that is both captivating and engaging.

Barbara Scott-Emmet has written beautifully (as always), painting a very visual scene for us to delve into. Whilst almost ridiculing New Age and self-help psychobabble and mantras, The Land Beyond Goodbye explains and extalls the spiritual beliefs and practices of Aboriginal peoples, taking the reader into previously unexplored territory. Different in style and content from a lot of Barbara Scott-Emmet's work, The Land Beyond Goodbye highlights the wisdom of women, and that we ignore this at our own detriment.

I enjoyed this very much, I read most of it in one day. Although I found it quite sad in parts, I really wanted to get to the end to find out what happens. Read it, if you have ever been to Oz you will love it and if you haven't you will want to go.
