Volume 1. Venetian & North Italian Schools

Bernard Berenson's famous essays on the Venetian, Florentine, Central and North Italian Painters of the Renaissance first appeared between 1894 and 1907.

it is a testimonial to the soundness of his judgement that they hav since taken their place among the great writings of art criticsm and that they were only recenetly described as 'imcomparably the best introduction in any language to any school of painting' - Times literary supplement.

The Phaidon edition reproduces all of the pictures discussed at any length.

191 Illustrations (8 colour). Cover design by edward gould.
