Biography

“I revere the Duke, but I didn’t want to make a reverent album”, Joe Jackson says of The Duke, his new tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington.

The Duke is indeed an unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his compositions while showcasing Jackson’s skills as arranger, instrumentalist and singer. Though it’s his second ... Read more in Amazon's Joe Jackson Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 19 Oct 2012
By John R
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album is just brilliant. It hooked me on the first play and it just grows and grows.

Do you have to be a Joe Jackson fan? Well, probably not, as the album's style is a completely modern take that shares roots with much of his output but doesn't fit closely to it either.

Having said that, if you are expecting something along the lines of Jumpin' Jive, you will probably enjoy this. That doesn't mean it is a repeat show of that album but with another composer - Duke goes in another direction altogether and is a complete re-interpretation of Ellington's music rather than the pastiche evident in Jumpin' Jive.

The musicianship is inspired, and to make it even better, the sound quality of the recordings is exceptional. Crank it up! Thoroughly recommended.

I have just about everything Jackson has recorded and was looking forward to the album, which boasted taking Duke Elllington standards and adding Joe Jackson's unique interpretation. He does that with mixed success. At times the album fulfills potential but at other times it drags on a bit. And this from a Jackson fan!

I saw Joe at Cadogan Hall recently and the album is best served live by Jackson's very capable band but not as impressive on CD.

Joe Jackson should have been much more successful than he was, his writing is top notch at times. But it was ambitious projects like Jumpin' Jive, Night Music and Will Power that possibly confused his audience reducing it to the absolutely committed. I am afraid anyone hearing The Duke as Jackson's first work would be turned off before attempting the very impressive back catalogue.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good addition to my music collection 23 July 2012
By Rob Smith TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Wasn't sure about this album, I've enjoyed Joe Jacksons work since the Beat Crazy, the odd one has disappointed, I didn't like Will Power and Jumpin' Jive was not a favourite.

I'm still not sure about The Duke, it makes you appreciated how good a musician and producer Joe Jackson is. I like It Don't Mean a Thing, some of the tracks the are up beat without being to off the wall, but there are a number that I just don't get.
If I was to pull out a couple of Stand out tracks for me are I like It Don't Mean a Thing , I Got It Bad (And It Ain't Good) which are amazing productions.

A good addition to my music collection, not sure how many times I will revisit it, albums like Night And Day I've been playing on and off for years and still don't tire of any track, The Duke may takes some more listening.

This album will be loved by Duke Ellington fans but may be not the hard core Joe Jacksons fans.

Only grumble was the Amazon original list price was very high, I ended up purchasing it from a competitors site which was £7 cheaper than Amazon at the time, although Amazon are now 3p cheaper
