About the Author

Suzy Witten's career spans twenty years in the entertainment industry: as a filmmaker, screenwriter, story analyst, and editor for film and television. A graduate of USC's School of Cinematic Arts, she was nominated for the Lillian Gish Women In Film filmmaking award, and was a Walt Disney Studios Fellowship Finalist for her story about the Salem witch-hunt. Currently, she works as a public information officer, writer and researcher during disasters for FEMA. She resides in Los Angeles. THE AFFLICTED GIRLS is her first novel.

The Afflicted Girls has it all: a wonderful, absorbing story and a fascinating cast of characters. I was caught up in the tale from the first page - unlike so many books where one has to wade through numerous pages before the story becomes interesting.

We see Salem and the events that happened there at the end of the 1600s in a new and compelling way. As the story unfolds it reads like a good mystery and yet it is a lot more; as the author has done extensive research into the language, customs and conventions of the time in which the story takes place. I particularly enjoyed the wonderful use of language. We are also provided with careful descriptions of eating habits, the manners in which varieties of herbs were used, the use of utensils and cooking practices, many of which are no longer in evidence. Intertwined in the tale Ms Witten has written of the sexual practices of her characters again using the language and mores of the time in a very interesting manner.

The cast of characters are well-developed and believable. There are heroines such as the orphan Mercy Lewis and Bridget Bishop: the intelligent free-spirited owner of the local tavern who has a keen business sense and a significant knowledge of herbs, charms and potions. The mystical and exotic Tituba, an Arawak Indian from a Carib tribe who is a recurring pillar in the story,.

Throughout the book the author has inserted quotes relevant to the story, from the writings of the time but also lovely lines of poetry.

Always in the background for the residents of Salem Village is the Devil; he is feared and to many is always ready to pounce on those persons who are unvigilant.... Read more ›

Suzy Witten's historical mystery is the perfect book to curl up with on a chilly winter's day. Saying this, is it a great beach read too (I know because it accompanied me on both).

Right from the start, the reader is jolted back in time to 1690s New England - an extreme and harsh world of intense beliefs, rarely rational and often veering towards the magical. The historical information provided is fascinating, while the narrative is so cinematic that the reader is absolutely pulled in. The two main characters, Mercy and Abigail, are so alive they seem to dart out of the book. The rottenness of the place and many of the people there is a major theme.

The book suggests that the witch trials actually had a 'rational' cause of a girlish prank gone very wrong. This is an interesting thesis but what I most enjoyed about the book was its open endednes, that nothing is quite what it seems.

5 Stars. Although I read mostly non-fiction, I was asked by the author to read and review her recently published novel about the Salem Village witch-hunt: "The Afflicted Girls." THE AFFLICTED GIRLS I expected to read a well-researched, well-written book. Instead, I read the most provocative, insightful and engaging historical novel about what occurred in colonial Salem in 1692. Suzy Witten has dived deep into the historical record of Salem and brought back the elusive pearl: the only satisfactory explanation in 300 years for those mysterious afflictions at the heart of the Salem Village witch hunt, and for its cruel aftermath. This book is powerful--a complex story written from numerous points of view of many of the famous characters, who all intersect dramatically, but not in typical ways. This is a suspenseful retelling, well-structured, cinematic, and authentic in its period voice, but at the same time curiously modern, and relevant. With exposure this book, I believe, could garner as much praise for its reconstruction of Salem, as Arthur Miller reaped for his.

The Salem Witch Trials have fascinated people for over 300 years. A frenzy of accusation and executions, followed by recantation and vindication--but much too late. It's the stuff of horror stories.

How could this madness be triggered by the wild accusations of children and adolescents? Oh, so easily. There's always someone who has something to gain...

The author has spun a terrifying tale, drawing us deftly into the minds and hearts of the major characters. Her story makes sense. It could have happened much that way...and it could happen again.

This is not a book for the precious and delicately sensitive. But it is a good read for anyone who can bring an open mind to it, and has a sound grasp of the way society actually functioned at the end of the 17th century. Thoughtless brutality and smug hypocrisy existed--whether you like to read about it or not.

Bob Davidson - I thoroughly enjoyed this work. It captures the dark, sombre ambience of the times and of old Salem, while simultaneously illuminating all facets of the intriguing characters that populate its pages.
