Having been caught in a compromising position during her first London season, which resulted in a duel that left one man dead and the other fleeing the country, Alex is a ruined woman. And yet she's managed to find a measure of contentment by managing her brother's land, and putting the terrible mistakes of her past behind her. That is until Collin shows up, raking up the past and stirring up feelings Alex thought long gone. Yet the longer they spend together the more the heat of attraction burns. But with the past and their social positions forever between them, can they ever trust enough to let go of their fears and surrender to love? Victoria Dahl's debut is a delicious mix of strong characters, hot sensuality and the darkness of mistrust. Alex is a heroine more suited to modern times, who kicks hard at the constraints of society - understandable since she was raised by her carefree, rakish brother. She simply wants the same freedoms he has, so when Collin crosses her past he doesn't stand a chance. Not that Collin is weak - he's stubborn, honourable and all twisted up inside by his illegitimacy. While Alex's behaviour in the first half is wilful, foolish and occasionally selfish, the second half is Collin's turn to be an idiot. Yet depite all this, Dahl makes them both sympathetic and likeable enough that even when Collin's actions verge on hateful, I still wanted Alex to have a happy ending. I'm a big fan of Dahl, both her lighter contemporaries (starting with Talk Me Down) and her darker historicals (continuing with A Rake's Guide to Pleasure (Zebra Historical Romance)). The historical element is little more than a backdrop, but the characters are always compelling. Right from the start. If you like characters you can root for, even when you want to shake some sense into them, give Dahl a try.

Enjoyable read. Head strong female, moody Scottish male lead. The heroine is a 'Fallen Women' so she may as well enjoy her status which she does when she sets her sights on seducing Collin Blackburn.
Read the book in 3 sittings and have already ordered additional books by Victoria Dahl.

I liked both the hero and heroine in this book. Even when they made some pretty messy mistakes, their regret was genuine. They each had a lot to learn about how to be a couple. Their fears for the future were realistic, and their resulting actions made sense. Dahl never fell into any of the typical, overused themes that we read repeatedly. The characters were not built like gods/ goddesses. Neither was totally right, while the other was totally wrong. Both were, to put it simply, human.
Alexandra is a recluse. During her coming out season, she was caught kissing a man. Her reputation destroyed, there was nothing for her to do but retreat from society. Rather than wallow in self- pity, Alex has found happiness in caring for her older brother's estate. She may be the sister of a duke, but she is not afraid to get her hands dirty in the stables. Loving his sister, no matter what her faults might be, the duke gives her the freedom to live as she pleases. Collin resents having to leave Scotland in search of his brother's killer. The last thing he wants to do is speak with the woman who caused his younger brother, John, to be shot to death in a duel for her honor. He believes the same as the rest of society... that she must be a harlot. Upon meeting her in person, he begins to doubt what he has heard about her from the gossips. When she agrees to help him capture John's killer, Collin knows that she can't be the selfish wench he thought her to be. Alex can't stop thinking about Collin. Even after he has returned to Scotland, she decides she will have him. Men of honor have been rare in London society. She doesn't want to give up her freedom, but wants to experience physical affection. Her reputation already destroyed, Alex feels she has nothing to lose. Collin has spent his life behaving with honor and good judgement. When Alex tempts him into meeting with her, he decides that just this once he will put his restraints aside and live for his own happiness. What can it hurt? She's certainly no innocent. As circumstances of the meeting unfold, both Alex and Collin find it hard to keep their physical relationship and their emotions separate. When Alex falls ill, Collin will not leave her until he knows she is safe and well. Once she is healed, he will do all he can to convince her to marry him. Neither has ever professed their love for one another, but both feel it to their very souls. They will soon learn how foolish it is to keep such a secret. Resentment and suspicion threaten to destroy their fragile bond. All the while, John's killer hides close by, waiting for a chance to get revenge for his exile. Love a wee Scottish tale? These are some that I enjoyed: Scotsman One of my absolute favorite romances ever! The Pride of Lions and Blood of Roses A two book series that will knock you off your chair. Bring the Kleenex for the last 100 pages. You will be deeply effected. Sweet Release Carnal Gift Ride The Fire (Leisure Historical Romance) A very romantic three book series. "Ride The Fire" is another of my all- time favorites. Surrender (Leisure Historical Fiction) Story of three Scottish brothers who migrated to the US. This book is about the oldest brother. We are still waiting for the next two. Come on, Ms. Clare! Kiss of the Highlander (The Highlander Series, Book 4) The Dark Highlander (The Highlander Series, Book 5) Two books out of a long series. I have to say the heroine in To Tempt a Scotsman seemed to be on some kind of super-duper love potion. She went after the poor hero, Collin, with a vengeance. I picked this book up after I had read the author's later book. I liked the book featuring Emma and Somerhart better than this one. My complaint with that book was that Emma was really dark==had a lot of emotional baggage from her childhood. But, that book was head and shoulders better than this one. Somerhart was a dream.
To Tempt a Scotsman seemed to be a series of vignettes wherein Alex, our heroine, attempted to get Collin to make love to her. There didn't seem to be any reason for her to want him other than she liked his body. She really did seem to be willing to be intimate with many men. She was inexperienced, but that didn't seem to be from lack of trying. I really didn't like her--she was hot to trot and that was about all. If you like sex, not love, scenes, strung together, To Tempt a Scotsman, is the book for you. If you like some redeeming qualities in your romance novel characters, you will need to look elsewhere. 11 of 15 people found the following review helpful:

Collin Blackburn is determined to avenge his half-brothers death and bring his murder to justice. He leaves his home in the Scottish lowlands and scours all of England and Paris in hopes of finding the man. This leads him to English beauty who caused a scandal and precipitated the duel that lead to his brothers death.
The daughter of a duke, Lady Alexandra Huntington is no ordinary women. Beneath her facade is a wanton woman ready to be set free. Already ruined, she goes about living her life as she pleases. The freedom she gained from the scandal is a double edged sword. Alex is no longer bound by normal convention. Wearing breeches and not having to curb her tongue are some of the advantages. Unfortunately there are also the unwanted leers and suggestions that she must contend with. When they meet, sparks fly and Collin quickly realizes that Alex is not the treacherous women he thought she was. But as a ba*tard, Collin has no hopes for a future with the tempting beauty. Alex has other ideas. She plans a full seductive assault that is sure to bring the brawny Scotsman to his knees. A very good debut. Honestly I was a bit shocked by the behavior of the heroine. She practically throws herself at the hero. Seriously, she is like a b*tch in heat. Not your average historical heroine. It took a bit of getting used to. And the hero, jeeze who doesn't love a bonnie Scot, was so cute with the constant blushing over the heroine's antics. Sort of a reverse in roles if you will. The love scenes were a well written and a plenty. The heroine's honesty was refreshing but the hero's jealously was extremely irritating. I do think that the murder subplot could have been explored a bit further. The secondary characters were very interesting including the nasty and manipulative housekeeper as well as the outspoken female neighbor. Some surprises (although I did think that one was a bit unbelievable) and lots of action. The other main fault that I found with this book is the amount of dialog, surprisingly too much. I would have rather gotten to learn more about what the characters were thinking other than saying. But all in all a good book, looking forward to the sequel with Alex's handsome brother, the duke. I for one cannot resist a Scot and the price can't be beat. |
