I can speak English just fine so it may seem a trifle odd to be reviewing a software package that caters to people learning English, but Tell Me More can also be used to teach young kids and is much more fun than the dull "phonetic" lessons I had when I started Primary school. The package is also the same across the board, so if your learning Japanese, Spanish, Italian etc the same features and activities will apply.
The package itself is very light. It contains a microphone and headset, which are a tiny bit flimsy, the DVD and some instructions. So for the asking price you're getting very little physical product. The value, obviously, is in the software and there's loads to keep you busy and help you on your language learning quest. Tell Me More is personalixed to your own learning ability and won't treat you like a generic user. It teaches based on actual phrases and dialect instead of typical foreigner catchphrases and doesn't stereotype. The virtual conversation feature is rather amusing. In fact, I would probably have learned more through this software than in 4 years of learning German the traditional way (from a perpetually angry teacher) back in high school. It's all easy to navigate and extremely user friendly to the point that even the most timid of technophobes will be able to manipulate and get the most out of it.
But at this price you need to be completely dedicated to learning whatever your chosen language may be.This is not a toy or superficial investment. If you have the money and the time then you will no doubt significantly improve in your quest.

There is very little I can say that will not be familiar to other reviews. I am a fluent English speaker but still gave this suite a good run for its money; and did not actually think until reading other reviews that it would be just as valid to use this in order to improve the grammar and vocabulary of younger children.
In the box is simply a DVD and headset; the apparent low cost of the headset is a shame considering the price of the product, and the premise of the software, i.e. high quality voice recognition.
However, it is this voice recognition that actually works rather well; at least with an English accent. It would have been far more telling, perhaps, to have test-driven a Spanish copy (aimed at English speakers) but then again even my deliberate attempts to put on accents that would have made even a Butlins comic blush were often interpreted by the software!
The software is easy enough to navigate and runs in essential 3 different modes. I think that the average user would have no problem using the 'fully guided' mode even if they had not read the manual at all, which must be a good thing.
Overall, a very good package, just a shame about the price.

Tell Me More comes as a DVD accompanied with a headset for use with the computer. There is no lengthy manual to read or heavy instructions for installation. Indeed, I loaded and registered my program with very little effort. I was able to choose a method for my instruction, "Free to Roam", "Guided" or "Dynamic Mode". I chose Dynamic Mode which I learned is designed with artificial intelligence for someone with a bit of experience with the language. All beginner students should choose "Guided Mode" which is much more of a hand-holding experience.
The levels contain thousands of exercises and many different types of activities, which develop oral and written language skills, grammar, vocabulary, and culture studies. A Day-planner type option is available to the homeschool teacher providing tracking information regarding student progress, comprehension and mastery of various skills plus a time table allowing the teacher and student to understand the time commitment the program anticipates necessary for completion of the program. This feature would be an excellent asset for students who like to work independently, but still need monitoring and occasional prodding.
