Product Description

WHAT IS OTG FOUNCTION?

USB On-The-Go, often abbreviated USB OTG, is a pecification that allows USB devices such as digital audio players or mobile phones to act as a host allowing a USB Flash Drive, mouse, or keyboard to be attached.

USB On-The-Go (OTG) allows two USB devices to talk to each other without requiring the services of a personal computer (PC). Although OTG appears to add peer-to-peer connections to the USB world, it does not. Instead, USB OTG retains the standard USB host/peripheral model, in which a single host talks to USB peripherals.

OTG does introduce, however, the dual-role device, or simply stated, a device capable of functioning as either host or peripheral. Part of the magic of OTG is that a host and peripheral can exchange roles if necessary.

Before OTG, the concept of an embedded host was already established in the USB world. Instead of duplicating the full UHCI/OHCI USB controllers and drivers built into PCs, most embedded host chips provide limited hosting capabilities. This makes them better suited to the embedded environment than a PC with its huge resources and infinite capacity for drivers and application software.

So this cable can completely instead of a high-priced USB Adapter to accomplish the same work.

Attention: please make sure that your device has OTG function first, it works with Android devices WITH custom ROM/Kernel that support USB Host mode.

With this Host OTG cable, it lets your device connect to most USB Flash Drives, Mouse & Keyboards. Please note that some of them may not be compatible. You can connect this to your external harddisk, but please make sure that you have external power source for the harddisk. Last but not least, it also work with non-power hungry card reader.

Please make sure that all external storage devices are formatted in FAT32, not NTFS or FAT, otherwise they won't be detected by your device

Well made and fast delivery, no qualms or quibbles. However does NOT work with a nexus 7 2013 edition. There is a bug with the Nexus 7 in Jellybean where USBOTG does not work at all. I plugged this cable in and got nowhere, so downloaded some diagnostic software from the Play store. It showed that the cable was not detected from Linux (which runs under Android) and wasnt detected in Android itself. But I knew about the bug so just waited until Kitkat. After the Kitkat update the cable WAS seen by Linux, but still not by Android. I emailed Google support who said that USBOTG was fixed in Kitkat as far as they knew and to try a different cable. So I ordered the popular "L" shaped one from amazon and that works absolutely fine. So, unfortunately this cable didnt work out for me, but as I say no problem with the cable itself in terms of quality so still consider it if you have a different tablet.

I ordered this USB OTG adapter so I can use my VIP Yubikey to securely make payments with the Paypal Android app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

I have configured Paypal to require two factor authentication(*), using my VIP Yubikey. Unfortunately this causes problem when trying to make payments with Paypal's Android app.

The VIP Yubikey produces a 6 digit OTP (One Time Password), which needs to be entered after logging into Paypal with your username and password. Paypal support says that in the Android app this code needs to be appended to the password in order to log in on Android devices, however as the Yubikey doesn't have a display, there is no way to obtain this code.

This ruled out the use of the Paypal app on my phone, and thus making mobile Paypal payments, for I refuse to lower my security settings for the sake of convenience.

Using this adapter cable, I can now use my VIP Yubikey (which presents itself to the host device as a standard USB keyboard and therefore doesn't require special drivers) with my mobile phone, just like on my PC and laptop.

I have also successfully used it to connect a diddy USB flash drive (Kingston Technology 16GB DataTraveler Micro) filled with movies, and watch them on my phone.

No doubt I'll find more use for it in the future, perhaps to connect a USB gamepad to play Android games!

(*) If you haven't got two factor authentication enabled for things like Paypal, eBay, Dropbox, Gmail etc, you really should.
