Try before you buy... 12 Nov 2009
I've had this radio now for approximately a year, using a Fatman 252 valve-amplifier, Monitor Audio BR2 speakers and external DAB and FM antennas mounted in the loft.

First, the good points. The build quality of this radio is superb, and the feel and response of the controls are lovely. Reception from DAB and FM is simply excellent, and the internet radio plays faultless and 'bug free'...

So why only 3 stars? Well, after a years use, I have taken the radio out and returned to my trusty old FM set. Why? It is simply that the ergonomics of the radio are to my mind terrible! There are no station presets on FM or internet. Use of the internet radio is cumbersome and navigating through the channel options is slow and difficult.

I think that the principle of internet radio is fantastic, and when accomplished through a computer works fine, but the design just isn't quite 'there yet' with this radio. It just felt like it had been added to the radio as an after-thought, and somewhat gimmicky. After about 3 months I stopped using the internet function.

Ergonomics are a very personal thing. I cannot fault the radio in any other way, other than the design, so if it is something that you can live with, then I would say 'go for it'. I would, however recommend that you see one 'in the flesh' and have a play prior to parting with any cash!!

I have TEAC Reference 300 series compact HiFi separates but wanted a tuner with DAB (I often listen to BBC 5 Live). I wondered if this piece of kit might allow me to upgrade my set up. I am pleased to say it all worked out. For a very keen price I now have a DAB tuner and internet radio added to my system which has given it a new lease of life. The unit looks good too, although its black compared to the silver colour of the Reference 300. The tuner works with my old Reference system remote, albeit with some loss of functionality. Set up was easy. I was up and running with both DAB and internet stations within a few minutes. The internet tie up with my home wifi was very straight forward. Others have noted that the display / function buttons of the tuner can make navigation a bit confusing, which is true, but I am getting used to it and if you are not exploring the many available stations all the time its fine. Also, you can set favourite categories and stations directly onto your device via a simple web service which lists hundreds of available streams from all over the world. I really think this is a very well built and excellent value device from TEAC, especially at the price being offered now. Even more so if you have a Reference system already.

I searched long and hard to find an affordable dab/internet tuner to update my Hi-Fi, and here it is!

Some people found the TEAC difficult to use or set up, but with a decent router I found little problem. Sure it is a little annoying at first until you get the hang of it, andI still cant get internet presets to work properly, I have to scroll through many stations. However, on start up the default is to the last station listened to, so no real hardship, just a bit fiddly. DAB works well with a good aerial. Sound quality is better than I was expecting. All things considered, an excellent solution at a good price. I love it.
