The main benefit of this set is listening to audio in a high background noise area e.g. aircraft, train, crowds - with the noise reduction feature on. Without noise reduction activated, music or in flight entertainment etc is drowned out by engine noise etc. But once the noise reduction is activated, audio becomes significantly clearer and seems to reach a higher pitch. It makes a very noticeable difference to watching movies on a flight or listening to music on a train i.e. you can hear dialogue, vocals, instruments clearly.
The noise cancellation feature alone (i.e. no audio on) does not effectively `cancel' noise on a flight or train. It lowers the pitch and volume of engine noise making it sound more like a nearby noisy air conditioner or vacuum cleaner. The feature was significant in a busy shopping centre in reducing the noise of multiple background conversations by over 50%, may be up to 70%. It had no impact when tested against a washing machine on spin cycle or nearby television.
Regarding the set itself. The ear pieces are comfortable but are more on ear than `ear enclosing.' The frame is slightly flimsy and has a central hinge. Along with swivel hinges between the ear pieces and frame, the whole set can fold for storage and portability in the PVC bag provided. The right ear piece houses a single AAA battery for noise cancellation which is activated by a switch on the same ear piece. Audio can pass through with this feature switched off. The cord has sufficient slack to allow standing while still plugged into aircraft in flight entertainment. A volume control is mounted on the cord and appreciably amplifies audio or mutes it. Lastly, so far the same AAA battery has been used for over perhaps over 72 hours cumulative use.
