I have been using these tapes since 1990! I was advised to keep to one brand by my nephew, and can honestly say I have only had one tape out of about 300 that has ever given any trouble. My only concern, in these days of hard drive, is still being able to find them. Argos no longer stock them. I too always black a tape before using.

I have used three tapes so far. All of them have reproduced good quality videos on the LCD TV and also on transfer to hard disk after MPEG conversion. I haven't tried recording after deleting prior videos. I suppose that might be the test of true quality and durability.
