The plotline is deft: Babe and his adorable city friends (chimps, bulldogs, a poodle, a goose, and a trio of mice) embark upon the complicated project of feeding all the hungry animals in Metropolis, an effort that requires much consideration and advance planning (not bad attributes to condone). In the first section, children learn to identify long and short vowel sounds by helping Thrifty the shopkeeper clean up the canal. (In exchange, Thrifty gives them pots and pans for cooking).
In the most successful section, a spelling lesson turns into a magical, empowering exercise via the inventive premise of a fundraiser that involves a bubble machine dispersing letters into the sky. As the chimps Zootie and Bob start the machine, a faint word appears in the background. When the children click on all the floating letters needed to spell the word, the word fully materializes and so do beautiful surprise pictures that may be printed out.
There are two significant glitches in this CD: the use of a murky, squeaky British voice to recite some of the more complicated rhyme passages and the unnecessarily ink-drenched illustrations that take ages to print on all but the most up-to-the-minute machines. In the grand scheme of things, however, these are small complaints about an exceedingly charming product. --Jean Lenihan
