Product Description

"The best computer programmers are astonishingly more productive than average. One reason is that they use good tools, and they use them well. Clif Flynt's Tcl/Tk: A Developer's Guide, Second Edition helps you improve your effectiveness as a developer in both of these ways. Tcl is a software language with a great return on investment-it achieves portable, powerful, economical results with great economy. Just a few lines of Tcl are enough to create applications that are both interesting and useful. Clif draws on his deep experience as a front-line developer to help you get the most out of Tcl. He writes clearly, and has organized his book with instructive examples that teach the essentials of Tcl. He covers the right material too: Tcl/Tk packs in not just such long-standing Tcl strengths such as its easy networking and graphical user interface, but also the latest breakthroughs with internationalization, widget upgrades, and StarPacks. Want to take your programming to the next level? Get Tcl/Tk: A Developer's Guide, Second Edition." -Cameron Laird is vice president of Phaseit, Inc. (, where he specializes in Rapid Enterprise Integration with Tcl and related tools. His frequent publications on information technology include the popular "Regular Expressions" column (

Sound reference to modern Tcl/Tk programming 12 Aug. 2012
By Massimo Manghi - Published on
Format: Paperback
In recent years the Tcl/Tk programming language has gone through an intense process of reform, with new important features being added. The evolution of Tcl/Tk has set off again but a up-to-date guide to this apt and easy to learn language was missing. Flynt's book came to fill this gap and I think it did successfully. Not only you have a clear view of the features which are now stable components of the language, you also have a reference to the many new components which are transforming Tcl/Tk and will be in the soon to be released 8.6 version.

This is a solid learning tool for the latest developments 4 Oct. 2012
By Chris Clayton - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The Tcl/Tk language continues to develop, and this book covers the latest version of the language. It's a thorough introduction to the language, its major extensions, and its newer object-oriented features. As with the previous versions, the writing is clear and enjoyable to read. The focus of all of the explanations is on how to use the language to solve realistic problems, which makes it a must-have for developers, especially those new to the language and its development environment.

I do have to point out that all of the reviews agree that the book's content is first-rate, even the ones that are disappointed with the formatting of the Kindle version. The publisher does need to address this - many readers today are relying on Kindle for their carry-around references - but that issue shouldn't get in the way of letting readers who are looking for a solid way to learn about the latest developments know that this book is what they need.

Liking it a lot so far 5 May 2014
By Mark E. Voltz - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Whatever kindle formatting issues may have existed before they seem to be fixed. I haven't seen any issues yet although to be fair I haven't finished the book yet either. I'm very happy with the writing style and the content. If you are looking to gain knowledge in Tcl this is a good place to start. The language continues to evolve and I see it remaining relevant for quite some time to come.
My Favorite Tcl/Tk Book 14 July 2014
By Tim Moore - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Tcl/Tk: A Developer's Guide is my favorite Tcl/Tk book. I find it to be a good blend of a tutorial and an updated view on the newest TCL developments. It is well written and very understandable.

Solid 4-star print version, but unacceptable formatting of Kindle edition 20 April 2012
By Kindle Customer - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I purchased the print edition, and was pleased by its treatment of recent changes to Tcl/Tk. However, the Kindle version is a disaster.

First of all, the description on the product page has the wrong publication date. According to the current page, the Kindle version (which was not available when I purchased the print edition) is now listed as having been published a year before the print edition.

Secondly, and more importantly, the layout of the Kindle version is almost unreadable due to extraneous line breaks, poorly-formatted code samples, and generally non-existent proofreading. This is another sad example of publishers taking no care to ensure that ebooks are treated as first-class citizens.

The print book deserves 4 stars, but I can only give the Kindle edition one star since I can't actually give it less. For the record, I kept the print version as a valuable addition to my programming library, but promptly returned the Kindle edition for a full refund.
