I'm too young to remember Jim Taggart and I only really got into the show towards the end of Jardine's time so, for me, Taggart is the Burke, Ross, Reid and Fraser ensemble, the witty lines, twisty-turny plots and, of course, the Glasgow-spotting. In this latest (presumed last) series, there's certainly no doubt we're in Glasgow but that's all that remains from previous series. The new writers may have good ideas for plots but their grasp of the characters was poor. Where was the humour? The characters teasing each other? Robbie's flirting and Matt's dry put-downs? The eternal 'will they-won't they' between Jackie and Robbie? And where was Stuart?? (Wandering the streets of Shieldinch on BBC Scotland after an unceremonious sacking!) The office has changed again but it looks more like an art studio than a CID office and the whole thing's been shot under a 40 watt bulb. The hour long (including adverts!) length was in some ways too short to flesh out the stories properly but in other ways, I was glad to turn off after an hour. Robbie's about to fall off the wagon yet I've seen it too many times before to actually care now. Even Jackie looked bored at times. Previous episodes held my interest, even if the murderer was identifiable long before the last ad break. These ones are a spectacular fall from grace.
If I were in charge of drama at STV and I watched only these episodes, I wouldn't be in a rush to re-commission this show either and it's a real shame. I don't watch Taggart for realism, I get enough of that at work, I watch it to be entertained and, sadly, I just wasn't. If, by some miracle, there are any more episodes, here's a suggestion: bring back the laughs, give Jackie something to smile about and please please please sort Robbie's life out for him.
