This book is valuable to all those interested in demystifying reviews, and should enable you to initiate your own. (Hospital Doctor, November 2003 )

The tone is layman-friendly, yet scientifically concise, appropriate for health professionals or for individuals ... it is certainly an excellent introduction to the principles of systematic review and a good companion to designing a protocol to initiate reviews and critical appraisals. (Current Medical Research and Opinion )

New reviewers will find a wealth of information in this book, which will certainly aid the review process. (Dr M Margaret Nicol, British Journal of Occupational Therapy, July 2003 66(7) )

This book provides an invaluable tool for clinicians, educators or researchers... the materials in the book are very well organised, and are structured into logically flowing sections with clear headings and very useful worked examples. (Physiotherapy, 2003 )

This little book is a gem. It is one of the several available on the subject, but it stands head and shoulders above its opposition on account of its brevity and clarity of prose. If you ever read or write systematic reviews, read this book first. (British Journal of Surgery, March 2004 )

The libraries of all educational and research institutions concerned with health sciences should have one. (The British Journal of Healthcare Computing & Information Management, February 2004 )

The real strength of this book is that not only gives an excellent account of the stages involved in a systematic review but also manages to convey an enthusiasm to make the reader want to conduct one. If only all medical books were written with such clarity! (Primary Care Mental Health Volume 2, Number 1 )

This book provides and ideal introduction to the process of systematic reviewing. ... This is a useful and helpful book, providing a good introduction to systematic reviewing. I hope many will read it... (ENT News, Volume 13, Number 4 )

The case studies are... excellent... I believe this is an essential textbook for all clinicians involved in evidence-based medicine. I believe it is widely applicable to health-care professionals at all levels of practice... I will certainly ensure that it is my library. The book is a short but excellent volume of use to all clinicians addressing the key principles of systematic reviews in evidence-based medicine. (ANZ Journal of Surgery )

Product Description

For many healthcare professionals there is a mystery surrounding systematic reviews of healthcare literature. How did they select certain studies and reject others? What did they do to pool results? How did a bunch of insignificant findings suddenly become significant? With this book you will embark on a journey that will provide the key information required to demystify these intrigues. By understanding the principles behind reviews of healthcare literature, you will be able to assess the credibility of the recommendations handed down to you in published reviews and practice guidelines.

Systematic Reviews to Support Evidence-Based Medicine simplifies and explains the key steps involved in reviewing literature, directing its deliberations at a readership of nurses, doctors, allied health professionals, public health personnel, new reviewers and students of epidemiology and health technology assessment.

The authors are veterans of over 150 systematic reviews. Over the years they have worked with healthcare commissioners, clinicians and other decision-makers, producing reviews to inform policy and practice. They have collaborated with other epidemiologists and statisticians to advance methods for undertaking systematic reviews and between them; they have a wide and appropriate range of experience of reviewing and applying findings of healthcare research.
