This is part of the Iolo product line of security software, it is a well-established brand in anti virus and shielding which is good to know. It comprises of several security modules that you can purchase separately, (though why you would really want to I don't know), or as part of the System Mechanic Professional 7 package. One solution in recent times has been to add more and more functionality for the asking price. Iola has done away with this aspect by using a back-to-basics approach by only fitting System Shield 3 with the three basics you need: anti-virus, anti-spyware and a firewall. So, if you're looking for anti-phishing, encryption or protective vaults, you're better off looking for a more comprehensive package, this only builds behind something you may already have. Make note, it just provides antivirus/firewall features, vulnerability/spyware tests, real-time guards for browsing, processes, and startup menu along with an overview menu for the entire product. Installation was simple and quick, concluding with a setup wizard for simplifying customisation to your tastes, a welcome addition. The firewall is highly configurable and flexible with what you can customise to your personal needs, System Shield 3's vulnerability scan was good at spotting problem areas and highlighting things I hadn't noticed. It did throw up the occasional false read-out but having said that its better that it is over zealous than lax. You can also easily undo and back track up to several steps of changes you have made if they don't work out for you. I liked the feature that lets you cancel automated scans, sometimes you have to log on when they are running, you don't have to bring up task manager to do this. This is of benefit because the virus scan was taking up a lot of my CPU activity.Read more ›

So far so good. No virus infections. The in-depth scanning is much better than my previous virus-guard software (AVG 9) and also just as it says on the box quite unobtrusive and although on my slowish laptop I do notice it operating occasionally, it still takes our less speed out of the computer than when I had AVG. Also the fact that it has antispyware rolled in too, it meant I could uninstall windows defender, which also used to slow things down for me. So it has advantages. The only thing I would say is that it only has a one year license, but they do offer discount on the second year but you need to sign up now. Previously when I bought AVG, it came with a two year license on first purchase.

But it 's 3PC license, so that is a bonus especially as some households have more than one computer these days

When purchasing a virus scanner from a company that is not well known there is always that fear at the back of your mind. Is it a worthwhile program, will it crash my PC, will it be in English? (gross exageration but there is always that concern when you are buying a non-brand item).

It seemed to start rather well - my PC seemed to be ticking along rather nicely. No viruses at all. I was feeling rather smug - giving the middle finger to those who have the well known McAfee virus scanner. However, like those who are sexually active, you should get tested for the nasties. It's when the symptoms start that you suddenly realise you haven't been as careful as you thought you were.

That day came 2 months after I had installed the program on my PC. A system crash, followed by a "screen of death" and then when the PC booted up - the PC went haywire, refused to connect to the internet (thankfully) and add to that, pop up windows rather cheekily saying I had a virus on my computer. Some may say I should have been careful who I was letting my PC engage with, I was being careful but apparently not enough.

The software was found to be lacking. I have used various software packages like Bullguard and Kaspersky. I remain a fan of both of those programs. They flagged up when viruses had been detected on the computer and when something had attempted a breach of the firewall. System Shield was very quiet - it didn't seem to be doing anyting.

The interface is a bog standard affair. One particularly gripe was the inability to scan individual folders or drives - it was a system wide scan or bust.

Same computer usage and internet browsing requires some careful actions by the user, but by that same token I like my protection to be effective. System Shield was leakier than a sieve and like many a user before who invested in shoddy software, my PC caught something it shouldn't have.

This user is sticking to Bullguard.

I think this product is excellent. I have sampled a few different protection programmes lately and I really despise protection programs that use unnecessary amounts of memory and crucial system components to protect your system. I am also not fond of programs that want to watch your entire system activities, waiting to pounce on any suspect file or program most of which are related to a program that actually does something important.

System shield does none of these things, it is very much like the early Norton Anti Virus corporate editions that just monitor malicious files and suspect programs that could be spyware and that it pretty much all you need and it does it very well indeed. Already it has eliminated 4 viruses my son picked up and a dodgy program. The virus removal tool is also straight forward and easy to use and you can't by accident re-infect your system.

The only slight downer was that the updater likes to update the moment you log on, which is annoying when using a wireless network as Windows is still talking to router to assimilate logon details; system shield slows this process down further. Also disappointing is that the version I received is only for a year but I assume the retail version will be different. All in all a really good product stay clear of system works and try system shield.
