Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Whether your motives are practical, intellectual, or just plain curious, Spanish for Dummies is an entertaining CD-ROM program that will most certainly teach you a little Spanish.

Spanish for Dummies is easy to install. While there are two CD-ROMs, only the first one is required for installation. The user environment is colourful and fun, and navigation is simple. There is nothing too complicated in the way of menus, steps and selections, and each time you visit a new section, a cartoon tutor pops up to explain what you should do next.

The best feature of Spanish for Dummies is that it starts with the basics. It recommends the first thing you do as a new student is familiarise yourself with the different sounds of Spanish. You can listen to recordings of both male and female native speakers pronouncing single syllables, multiple words, and similar sounding words. This feature is realistic for new students who cannot begin to form sentences unless they know what Spanish sounds like. Other useful features include wide-ranging lessons, activities, and quizzes. The user goes at his or her own pace and can move forward or back, depending on learning speed.

For those who believe practice makes perfect, Spanish for Dummies incorporates speaking exercises into the learning plan. The downside is that these speaking exercises do require a microphone that does not come with the software. Ideal for anyone with a real interest in learning Spanish, it does not promise magical learning abilities, but rather incorporates real language-learning practice within the technology of interactive media. The result is a tutorial program that will put you well on your way to finding that bathroom in Madrid, asking for directions in Seville and buying the latest fashions in Barcelona. --Kendra Hayden

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Spanish, 3 Oct 2002

This CD ROM gives you a truly interactive experience to aid learning Spanish. The video footage and the use of correct pronunciation of words and letters is a great boost to the learning experience. The pack includes a microphone headset, which through practice, you can learn to pronounce words properly. There is also a dictionary on the ROM.
Definately one of the best introductory Spanish learning lessons you can buy.

Excellent bit of software.
Why?
Because the Dummies team have overcome one of the fundamental hurdles of learning another language; you cannot hear yourself speak it!

Therefore how can you gauge whether your pronunciation is accurate?

The format on the cd-rom is that you repeat words by speaking into a headset. The headset is provided and easy to use.
Your speech is recorded and played back to you.
The fascinating thing is that what you think you sound like and what you sound like are quite different!!

When each word is played for you to hear you also see a graph that I assume indicates the individual frequency and duration of the word as it is supposed to sound.

When you your effort is played back to you it shows you a 'soundwave' graph of what you sound like. With practise you can get a really close mimic of the correct pronunciation.

The software is a lot of fun, especially for kids. Highly recommended.
