Product Description

Keeping up with the evolving needs of your business can be challenging. Get a head start with Synology® DiskStation DS713+ and its high-performance, straightforward approach to data-management and protection. Whenever you’re ready, upgrade capacity with ease by adding an expansion unit. The Synology DiskStation DS713+ is backed with Synology’s 3-year limited warranty.

High Performance Dual Core CPU

With dual core CPU and Link Aggregation, Synology DS713+ keeps up with the speed of your business with 107.47 MB/sec reading and 107.08 MB/sec writing speed under RAID1 configuration in a Windows environment. For back up onto external hard drives, Super-Speed USB 3.0 ports provide ten times the transfer speed of its predecessor. Dual-LAN failover support and hot-swappable drives ensure continual service uptime during drive replacement or unexpected LAN failure.

Straightforward RAID-Management

Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically optimizes RAID capacity and protection based on hard drives installed, eliminating the need for identical sizes while retaining custom setup options for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID allows for more than one volume to be created on a single RAID structure, giving you flexibility across all available drives. Volumes can be expanded as necessary by allocation on the easy-to-use UI, and Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) does the rest without any service interruption.

Flexible Scalability Up To 28 TB

When the storage capacity of DS713+ nears its limit, upgrading is easy with Synology DX513 expansion unit.2 Connected via eSATA with especially designed locking devices, DX513 expands storage capacity up to a maximum of 28 TB with minimal time-investment in setup and configuration.

Virtualization Ready

Fully compliant with VMware, Citrix, and Hyper-V, with iSCSI and VAAI support, DS713+ is the most affordable virtualization storage solution of its kind, allowing SMB users to consolidate data storage while giving the illusion of locally attached disks.

Cross-Platform Interoperability

DS713+ runs Synology’s award-winning DiskStation Manager (DSM) – an easy-tooperate OS which can be customized to include applications of your choice to fulfill your requirements.

Within your business environment, extensive network protocol support provides seamless cross-platform file sharing between Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Windows® AD and LDAP integration allows DS713+ to fit into existing business network infrastructure without having to recreate user accounts, while Windows ACL allows IT personnel to set up privileges to files and folders through familiar Windows UI, delivering peace of mind with simplicity.

Easy Backup Solutions

To protect your critical business data, DS713+ can become a centralized backup target for consolidating fragmented and unstructured information across your network through a range of options. PC users can backup to DS713+ with Synology’s Data Replicator, while DS713+ also fully supports Mac OS X’s native Apple Time Machine. Synology’s own backup wizard can back up information to another Synology NAS or any rsync server, with the option of using an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA. The wizard can also back up your information to the cloud, including Amazon® S3 and STRATO HiDrive.

Multi-Purpose Packages

Additional functions in the form of one-click-installation packages allow your DS713+ to take the place of other hardware. VPN Server turns your DiskStation into a Virtual Private Network server, providing secure access to your private LAN from remote locations. Surveillance Station creates a centralized interface for the management of IP cameras. Additional approved 3rd party PHP web application featuring tools such as content management, customer relationship management & e-commerce systems can be hosted on DS713+ by using Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL® web content.

I'll start by saying I work in IT and specifically with large storage SAN's (the bigger brother to a NAS) from some big names that cost over £500000 in a number of cases.

However as a home user I had a requirement to get a NAS to replace the utterly rubbish Buffalo Linkstation that'd failed and been back to the Netherlands 4 times !!

Not having the large corporate budget to buy a huge SAN (that and that I'd have nowhere to put it) I looked around for a NAS.
I settled on the Synology mainly because of good reviews and the software/ software support that they have.

The Synology software is based on a cut-back Linux operating system so I was happy it would be stable.
I also had a requirement for it to be able to play media (not DLNA) but to actually transcode movies on-the-fly for my media client Plex.

Although the support list claims that this processor won't do the transcoding for Full HD I can say it does - for multiple devices at the same time too !!

I deliberated over the Synology, QNAP and to a limited degree the Netgear. Eventually going with Synology primarily down to software support.

For the techies out there - I also wanted to get an x86 cpu so I would be able to run the majority of compiled apps for NAS.
I opted to get the 713+ as it had a slightly better cpu than the 712+ - glad I made the move.

I stuck a pair of 3TB disks in and mirrored them (I'm touchy about single disks now given my near loss of all my data from the extraordinarily buggy Linkstation where I had to use some low level recovery tools to claw it back! It took weeks to get all my family photos back !!

So - it's been up and running without issue now for months.

Now you can understand my excitement when I got to review the DS713+. Not only was it a Synology NAS but it was a dual bay with 1GB of DDR3 memory and a new beefier dual core 2.13ghz processor and the much requested USB 3 support.

I thought the DS712+ was quick but the DS713+ is something else with 202.3MB/sec reading and 135.84MB/sec writing. I have to say I was actually really pleased when I opened up the box to find a really sexy, sleek black matt NAS which aesthetically is almost identical to the DS712+. Like me you might be thinking how does this NAS manage to read and write so fast? Well I can let you into a little secret; it's called `Link Aggregation'. This basically means that the two Gigabit LAN ports on the back of the unit allow the DS713+ to get all the bandwidth that it needs. Link Aggregation does boost your speed. In a standard home environment will you notice? Probably not as the infrastructure isn't there. However soho or business environments where it will really shine. It'll keep multiple concurrent users very happy and provide much needed redundancy should one link fail.

The DS713+ is packed with the latest and best hardware that you could expect from a dual bay NAS. With a Dual Core 2.13 GHz CPU and 1GB DDR3, the DS713+ introduces a powerful evolution on the DS712+ that it replaces. With a maximum internal capacity of 8TB (not including the available expansion modules) made up of 2x 4TB drives, the options are endless.
A nice improvement from other Synology NAS' we have reviewed, is the ability to fit a 3.5" or 2.5" hard drive without the need of a 2.5" adaptor. Like many Synology NAS enclosures, the DS713+ had two hot swappable bays. This is perfect if one of your hard drives fails and you need to replace it without any down time.

This was a pretty easy device to use & setup. The features such as the user interface and the plethora of bundled packages software that are supplied, are some of the best that I have seen and are updated on semi-regular basis. You do not need to pay extra for these services, except for the IP camera licenses.
I have setup used a number of different branded units & find this one to be this easiest by far with very telephone and email support, You can use a wide range of compatible Hard Drives. In our case we have used the WD Se 4TB hard drives and they run well, obviously what type of drives you use are up to you.

When the storage capacity of the DS713+ nears its limit, upgrading is easy with the Synology DX513 expansion unit. When connected via eSATA with specially designed locking devices, the DX513 expands storage capacity up to a maximum of 28 TB, with a minimal amount of time spent in setup and configuration. (Please note DS713+ supports up to one Synology DX513/DX213, which you need purchase separately.)

Synology's DS713+ key features:

202.3 MB/sec Reading, 135.84 MB/sec Writing Speed1
Dual Core CPU & Superspeed USB 3.0 Ports
Dual-LAN Failover and Link Aggregation Support
Hassle-free Scalability Up to 7 Drives with Synology DX513
Extensive Surveillance with 20 HD IP Camera Capacity
VMware® with VAAI support, Citrix®, Microsoft® Hyper-V® compliant
Easy-to-Use Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) - and DSM 5 is not far off and looks very promising.

Final thoughts: This is our second Synology NAS product and simply speaking we recommend Synology products! This NAS box just sits in the corner and WORKS! There have been no issues! We had the device since June 2013, without issues.
