Product Description

Size Name: 12TB (4 x 3TB WD Red HDD)

Product Description

Synology DiskStation DS413j is a budget-friendly 4-bay NAS server for small offices and home use, specifically designed to provide a solution for file storage and sharing with data protection for your home environment with low power consumption, quiet operation and reliability.

Contains the WD Red HDD’s with WD’s NASware technology for improved efficiency, reliability and compatibility

Build Your Own Cloud

With Synology DS413j, you can centralize and share up to 16TB of data and files with coworkers and friends. If you find this way of managing files useful, you can have your own cloud by using Cloud Station to access and sync files across different computers. There is no need to configure a router to remote access the DS413j, by using Synology’s ezCloud, you can easily extend coverage to the Internet.

Manage your files on your Synology DS413j with File Station which provides easy file navigation on your DiskStation, allowing you to copy, move, delete, rename, upload, or download files without boundaries.

If you are always on the move, Synology provides a handy app, DS file for iPhone®, iPad® and Android™ users. Anything stored on Synology DS413j can now be accessed remotely using DS file via the Internet.

Flexible Storage Management

The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically builds an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed, eliminating the need to have hard drives of identical size, while still offering a manual setup option for advanced users.

Multiple Volumes on RAID allows you to create more than one volume on a RAID structure, providing a flexible and efficient way to manage your storage across all available hard drives. When the need arises to expand the volumes, simply allocate more storage space on the UI, and DSM does the rest for you without any service disruption.

Versatile Multimedia Center for Home

With the built-in media server on the DS413j, you can stream digital multimedia content from a Synology DiskStation to a media device such as a stereo system, Sony™ PlayStation® 3 and Microsoft® XBox 360. You can also stream videos and music to a DLNA®/UPnP® compatible TV set so you can enjoy your favorite movies or TV shows that are stored on your DiskStation. Your living room just got better.

For fully digitized music listening experience from the comfort of your couch, by connecting DS413j to a home stereo system and using DS audio App for iPad, iPhone and Android, users can control music playback with simplicity.

Share your Memories to Friends

Photo Station simplifies photo, video, and blog sharing to the public. Features such as theme personalization, blog, and user privilege settings make Photo Station your state-of-the-art lifestyle sharing center on the Internet. Photo Station syncs the album automatically to Facebook, so it is now even more closely intertwined with your social life.

Your 24x7 Download Server

Download Station functions as a 24x7 BT, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB download center without a PC. The eMule & BT search engine allows search-n-download capability without installing additional desktop applications.

RSS feed feature will bring the latest updates directly to you. You can subscribe to multiple RSS feeds that list the information of all your favorite downloads, and your download experience is entirely automated.

Back up All Your Important Files

The Synology DS413j offers a centralized backup target to all your PC/Mac® computers in the house. PC Users can back up their data to the Synology DS413j using the free Synology Data Replicator software, while Mac OS X® users enjoy native Apple® Time Machine® integration. A web-based backup wizard is provided for backing up data in the Synology DS413j to another Synology DiskStation or to an external hard drive via USB connection.

Here's my hands-on experience of the box:

- Hard drives don't need to be of the same brand or production batch or even of the same size. They don't even have to be installed all at once. You can start with one drive at some point add the second one etc. Just check the compatibility list available under the Synology website.

- Synology provides their own hybrid RAID system which supports the awesome features described above. That means if you start with one drive you don't have any backup, if you add a second one you get reflection backup and from the third drive onwards you get RAID-5 features meaning one drive can die then you replace it and no data gets lost. Search online for 'synology raid calculator' to find more about it and see what I mean.

- Setup is super easy: You plug-in the drives that can be up to 4TB each, you hit 'find.synology.com' in your browser, the box gets auto-detected, you pick up the RAID version (go for the hybrid one these guys produce - best of both worlds), the DSM OS gets automatically downloaded via the Internet and installed and you are ready to log in the box via your browser after 5-10 minutes. In the background there is the parity process to offer you 1 drive failure safety that will keep running and eventually complete in around 24 hrs but in the meantime you can still log in the nice Web Interface and take a look around.

- In its current incarnation (circa DSM 4.1) the DS413j comes with 1.6 GHz CPU and 512MB RAM. No USB 3.0, no RAM upgrade option, no eSATA for further extensibility, no WiFi built in. It looks OK, it's compact, solid on the top and surprisingly quiet with two large fans running in low speed. Also in terms of cost it's the best 4-bay Synology unit you can find on budget out there.

Background:
This was my first NAS enclosure purchase after doing some research (not enough apparently), with the intention to run a file server, a backup server, various services, and perhaps a VPN endpoint. I'm a software engineer so complex configuration doesn't worry me, and I did have to use SSH once or twice.

The Good:
- Synology's software is excellent. This is probably the cleanest plug in and go example of technology that I've used for a good while, so I can't fault it. There are many applications available via Synology's repository (all free), and if you add the Synology community's repository (synocommunity.com) you gain access to all sorts of new applications plus ports of desktop services including SABnzbd, Java, Python, web hosting, git, etc. If it's not there and you're feeling adventurous you can always install Debian to run alongside the Synology O/S, opening up all the offerings that come with Linux.
- The enclosure itself is very quiet, and when you're not loading the CPU it's literally silent. I only got to place one drive in it before things went wrong however, so I imagine the noise will vary according to the drives you use. I used WD Red for what it's worth.
- File copying speeds (again, drive dependent) hit 85MB/sec top end, which is actually fine. It isn't always the case that you'll see 85, but it's certainly possible.
- The enclosure is actually quite small. I placed it on my desk with a cheap gigabit switch on top and they were very neatly stacked and maintained a cool temperature. I'm not suggesting the enclosure is load bearing though, so don't go putting a monitor on it or anything crazy!

The OK-ish:
- User management is pretty average.

For a single box I am hugely impressed. As an owner of a small business this does it all:

1. Company fileserver, 9TB with RAID redundancy
2. Company webserver, transferred exiting website in under an hour
3. Company mailserver, took me weeks to create my own, 10 minutes with this
4. Company cloudserver, I'm gushing to people about this feature

All in one box. Ok, company is small, less than 5 people, but it does everything I need.

Replaced a Linux server which took me the best part of a month to build out with fileserver, mailserver and webserver.

Got this on Monday. Built it on Wednesday. Had it all up and running with the above servers and transferred all company docs from the old server, by the Friday. And that was in my spare time after a full day's work.

OK, it doesn't have the capacity for a SME or above but for your SOHOs it has everything in one simple to install and use package.

Cloud Station and Photo Station have apps for iPhone and Android so all company docs available everywhere (I have a thing about the security of on-line cloud services and my company data, sorry Google and Amazon and Dropbox).

Very simple to use. I'm just scratching the surface of what this little box can do.

Simply awesome.

Okay, firstly i am a female with limited network knowledge, just what you pick up surfing and when you have internet problems.
I bought this as a NAS to go with a boxee to stream movies around the home.

I took the advice of another helpful reviewer and paired it with these drives

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0073Q7GU6/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2

After my initial shock I was unable to connect to it (it was internet explorer at fault, so i tried firefox) I managed to connect to this unit and realise how consumer friendly it was. Didn’t take very long now I networked and just amazed at what this can do. I wont go into the tech stuff, the other guy reviewers know so much more but it now perfectly streamed my large collection of music and audio books to my mp3 player and Samsung galaxy note tablet easily. I can now go anywhere there is an internet connection and listen or watch my own movies, music or books. If it can be streamed you can access it, it seems!!

I do not know all the raid stuff yet of what it is really doing but this unit does everything you want and more so easily.

Would really like to learn how to host my own web pages, mail etc someday but for now this is the ultimate media unit for the whole home and outside. Especially for the price.

A very happy girl with what at first seems a daunting piece of tech.
