The operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager, delivers rich features for multimedia enjoyments, worry-free backup, Internet sharing, and energy-saving options.

Download Station functions as a 24x7 BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB download center without a PC. The eMule download engine allows search-n-download capability with a web-browser without installing additional desktop applications.

Audio Station supports music, Internet radio stations, and iPod playback with the optional speakers. An optional direction-free Synology Remote allows you to freely enjoy your music. Streaming mode allows your music to be shared with multiple users over the Intranet or Internet.

DLNA/UPnP Compliant Media Sever allows you to stream multimedia files with an UPnP Digital Media Adapter (DMA) to a stereo system or a TV-set. Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360 are also supported.

iTunes® Serve r is an easy way to share music with other iTunes clients over the network. Password protection prevents unauthorized sharing.

Back Up Your Precious Data
DiskStation Manager offers comprehensive solutions for you to back up data stored on DiskStation or your desktop computer to the DiskStation.

Server backup includes two alternatives: Network Backup and Local Backup. Both allow you to back up data in the shared folders and databases. Incremental backup option and flexible schedules are available. All can be easily configured with a step-by-step wizard.

Desktop backup provides your Windows PC with Synology Data Replicator for backing up desktop data, Outlook, and Outlook Express emails to your DiskStation by choosing one of the three backup modes: Immediate, Sync, and Scheduled backup, while Mac OS X users can use Apple Time Machine backup application to back up their critical data to DiskStation.

Enrich Your Web Presence
Photo Station simplifies photo, video, and blog sharing over the Internet. The flexibility of photo theme customization, blog layout arrangement, visitor’s privilege setting, RSS feed, and the dazzling 3-dimentional photo browsing with Cooliris make Photo Station your state-of-the-art lifestyle sharing center on the Internet.

Web Station with built-in PHP+MySQL allows you to publish your own websites or install numerous popular open source programs.

Access With Your Mobile Device
The iPhone and Android App, DS audio, allows you to stream music stored on your DiskStation with your mobile devices where Internet access is available, while DS photo+ allows browsing and uploading photos and videos stored on DiskStation from your mobile devices.

If you own a mobile device running on Windows Mobile® 6.0, iPhone OS 2.2.1 onward, or Symbian OS 9.1, you can log on your DiskStation to view photos with Mobile Photo Station and read supported file formats with Mobile File Station wherever Internet access is available.

Brilliant NAS 23 Nov 2010
I've had my DS411j for a few days now and I absolutely love it. It's the third NAS I've owned and is much, much quieter than the previous two (a Buffalo Linkstation and a Thecus N1200). I installed three 2TB Samsung HD204UI drives in it and it took about 14 hours to build the RAID5 array, which gave me plenty of time to read the extensive help files in the device's very slick web interface.

The media server is also much better than those on my previous two NAS devices, including the Twonky server I installed on the Thecus. If you're planning to use this to serve media to a DMA (digital media adapter) it'll be perfect.

Transfer speeds aren't up there with the high-end expensive models that are targeted as businesses but that's why this thing is £265. I just did a test transferring a 600MB file from my Windows 7 PC to the DS411j and back again and network utilisation was about 25% of my gigabit connection in both directions, with jumbo frames enabled. So it's more than fast enough for serving high-def media and anything else a home user is likely to do with it.

There are plenty of clever things you can do with it that I haven't tried out yet such as installing PHP/MySQL and content managers like Drupal, or creating iSCSI targets so that network PCs can use parts of it as native hard drives (including booting from it if you're a masochist).

Here's a tip for Windows users - if you want everyone on the network to be able to seamlessly access files on the DS411j without being prompted for login details, make sure you turn the guest account on (and grant it privileges to the shared folders you want to be accessible). It took me a while to figure that one out.

So, this is a well-built, quiet NAS with vast capacity and some resilience from disk failure (if you set it up that way). For what you get, the price is amazing.

Buying a new NAS drive is quite a daunting experience even for experienced users like myself. This is my fourth one having previously used Buffalo, Netgear and LG brands. You arn't quite sure whether every feature you like using will work. I did not experience any issues with this unit, in fact it has been quite a pleasant overall experience.

The hardware is superb. Its well made, looks great and quiet in operation. For a 4 bay unit its also reasonably compact.

The USP here and the reason I suggest you ultimately purchase this Synology drive is the software. Its fantastically easy to use, well laid out and works perfectly. For most NAS drives this is usually an afterthought and is often poorly implemented, buy Synology have clearly spent a lot of time and money developing the software and its paid off. I also like the Android app (DS Audio) which enables you to easily access all your music remotely. It works very well both over wifi and 3G. I don't think I could go back to any other software now.

The media server also works perfectly. I have over 3TB of movies and music backed up and do not experience any lag or faults when using the media server. This is a considerable advantage over my previous LG NAS which was severly let down in this area.

Overall for the price this is a superb piece of kit and once you have been through the not so daunting process of setting everything up you will be very pleased with your purchase.

Check drive compatibility on the manufacturers website before buying this or any other NAS

Be careful with Western Digital 2TB "Green" drives such as WD20EARS drives in NAS boxes in general. There is a specific disclaimer on the WD site saying not to fit these in NAS
If you look on the Synology site, there is a lot of stuff about the various "Green" low power drives
the best seems to be the Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2TB 32MB 5400RPM 3.5 inch SATA-II Internal Hard Drive - OEM - the key is the variant and it is model HD204UI/Z4 that you are after

There is a firmware upgrade for the Samsung F4s on the Samsung site. Apply it !!!!

Re The 411J, The main difference from the 410J, last years model, is that it now has a hardware encryption chip which speeds it up a little and the processor has been tuned up a little. The main drawback is that the RAM is fixed at 128MB and cannot be upgraded. The 410, more business than home has 512MB and is a lot faster but it is £100 more and is more for the small office than home.
Read the reviews on the ds410j - it is the same box as the 411j but slower running

The key thing for most is the excellent management software "Disk Station Manager 3.0". IMPO it is the main differentiator between Synology and QNAP. I won't say it is idiot proof but, it is reasonably intuitive and it is very easy to set up RAID and change RAID, add disks etc. It also has a clever proprietary hybrid RAID that you could use if you wanted.

Video and audio streaming works fine.

It isn't as simple as the DROBO but that is a bit of a marmite product loved and hated. Hated by those who have had a total data loss using DROBOs proprietary RAID. There are some Netgear home NAS - never used them myself but they are in a lower tier of functionality and reliability (read the Netgear forums if you get tempted to buy them)

If you want some fun, there is a bucket load of open source software packed with the DS411 and available from the Synology site. Excellent quality and you can run websites off the DS411j too

I am a real fan
