If you're looking at purchasing this product you're probably in the same boat I was in 6 months ago. I was looking at ALL the manufacturers of NAS drives for something that offered me large storage potential but more importantly speed. Speed is the utmost important thing for me as I am a photographer and deal with many hundreds (if not thousands) of 25+mb RAW files per wedding I shoot. Plus I also deal with large full HD footage (either as .mov files straight from my camera or as HD MKV's that I stream to my PS3 - which i'll get on to later...) so like I said, speed and more speed are high on my priority.

I have fitted 4x1TB samsung drives (not the 'green' ones mind you) into my DS410 and have configured them as a RAID5 array which allows for the redundancy of 1 drive failure whilst still performing at optimal read/write speeds. While we are on the subject of how it performs these are the results from the 'tests' I just performed for this review:

The file is 4.68GB. S = Synology, A = my system drive (a 7200rmp 320GB seagate), B = my secondary drive (a 3x500GB RAID0 (stripped) drive)

S to A = 1min (approx) and tops out at 78MB/s (which is the limitation of the system drive
S to B = same as above.

A to S = 2min, topping out at 41MB/s
B to S = same as above.

As you can see, the read and write speeds are pretty damn good, especially when they are compared to real world tests of comparable machines at a similar spec/price.

Depending on the files I have transferred i have seen read speeds of over 100MB/s (in RAID0) and a sustained write speed of 70-80MB/s which is phenomenal.

I mentioned that I stream HD files to my PS3 - this works an absolute treat.

With everything I buy, I spend hours trawling reviews, spec sheets, magazines you name it comparing every possible product until I find the best for my money. Therefore I bought this so I've saved you lots of hard work!

It looks fantastic and I have fitted it with 4 Samsung F3 2Tb HDD's. I have never used a NAS before but the Synology software is so easy to use and a doddle to set up that I now feel quite NAS savvy. I have set it up to home share my Itunes collection to all the computers in my house and my iPhone (There are Synology apps available for free on itunes for photos, music and the CCTV functions) You can host up to 30 small websites on it, use it as a mail server, a print server for your house (Share one printer over many computers) you can add up to 12 CCTV cameras to this to monitor your property, set up user access and loads of other things. The read and write speeds are fast and if you have the money, you'll be getting the best NAS for your cash.

I did a lot of research on which NAS box I should buy amoungst the many different choices out there. I was sceptical about the purchase as I had no experience of NAS beforehand and had no form of reference. I looked at many different makes and all seemed much of a muchness. At the end the only other NAS I considered was the Drobo but after reading many reviews on it I did not think it was a good enough system. Eventually I fell upon Synology and was impressed by the quality and features and indeed the large range of products in this category. The website offered good information and was easy to see that the unit was still being supported and the software was still being developed. The DS410 which I bourght has a full feature set which boasts more than just file storage. FTP, WEB, remote access, all the standard features and more. I was able to replace an entire server with this one box. Admittedly it was a little difficult at first to setup being a novice but it was easy enough to figure out with the online forums and manuals. The support was also good with quick and precise responses. One criticism would be the lack of detailed manuals supplied with the unit.
Since I have had the DS410 I have suffered several powercuts and on a couple of occasions the unit has indicated a fault on one or more hard drives, but after leaving it a while to recheck and rebuild itself I found all working as before with no missing data or errors. I would however recommend a small UPS if thats possible to allow for a clean shutdown to avoid any such problems with sudden power loss. You may also consider turning of the write cache if your data is critical and you want it saved imeediately.
Overall I am very pleased with the DS410 and its features and performance.
