Product Description

Synology DiskStation DS211j is designed to provide a cost-effective file storage and backup solution with RAID protection for your home environments. The operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager, delivers rich features for multimedia enjoyments, worry-free backup, Internet sharing, and energy-saving options.

Download Station functions as a 24x7 BitTorrentTM, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB download center without a PC. The eMule download engine allows search-n-download capability with a web-browser without installing additional desktop applications.

Audio Station supports music, Internet radio stations, and iPod playback with the optional speakers. An optional direction-free Synology Remote allows you to freely enjoy your music. Streaming mode allows your music to be shared with multiple users over the Intranet or Internet.

DLNA/UPnP Compliant Media Sever allows you to stream multimedia files with an UPnP Digital Media Adapter (DMA) to a stereo system or a TV-set. Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360 are also supported.

Server backup includes two alternatives: Network Backup and Local Backup. Both allow you to back up data in the shared folders and databases. Incremental backup option and flexible schedules are available. All can be easily configured with a step-by-step wizard.

Desktop backup provides your Windows PC with Synology Data Replicator for backing up desktop data, Outlook, and Outlook Express emails to your DiskStation by choosing one of the three backup modes: Immediate, Sync, and Scheduled backup, while Mac OS X users can use Apple Time Machine backup application to back up their critical data to DiskStation.

Photo Station simplifies photo, video, and blog sharing over the Internet. The flexibility of photo theme customization, blog layout arrangement, visitor’s privilege setting, RSS feed, and the dazzling 3-dimentional photo browsing with Cooliris make Photo Station your state-of-the-art lifestyle sharing center on the Internet.

The iPhone and Android App, DS audio, allows you to stream music stored on your DiskStation with your mobile devices where Internet access is available, while DS photo+ allows browsing and uploading photos and videos stored on DiskStation from your mobile devices.

If you own a mobile device running on Windows Mobile® 6.0, iPhone OS 2.2.1 onward, or Symbian OS 9.1, you can log on your DiskStation to view photos with Mobile Photo Station and read supported file formats with Mobile File Station wherever Internet access is available.

Synology DiskStation is designed and developed perpetually with the concept of energy saving. Compared with its average PC counterparts, Synology DiskStation consumes a relatively low amount of power and hibernates when not in use. This not only helps to save energy but also extends the lifespan of the hard disk. Synology DiskStation truly earns the title of “green product” because of the unique Scheduled Power On/Off feature, and the smart fan design effectively cools down the system with minimum power consumption, yet keeps the system quiet on operation. Finally, all Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology recognizes its responsibility as a global citizen and is continually working to reduce the environmental impact of the products we create.

Competely agree with the previous review from J.M. Friend and I'm glad to hear it's as good for a Mac OS as it is for an MS user. I've had the system for a couple of weeks now with 2 x 1Tb Hitachi drives installed (one of those recommended by Synology's website). As stated, the installation is very simple with a slide case and screws are supplied to mount your drive(s), there are no internal cables required as the drives simply slide into fixed SATA connections.

I've got W7, Vista and XP OS machines - all of these act in exactly the same way with the management GUI and Synology's backup software. I'd also recommend that any initial 'sizeable' data backup you perform is preferably carried out with a wired connection as in practise this halved the backup time (based on my clients and 211J being connected to my Sky broadband ADSL box which is only 100mb - strangling the 211J and it's Gb NIC).

The printer sharing facility is excellent, although if you do use the Synology utility to set this up on your client (which is the easiest option) then remember to check the bi-directional communication box in printer prefs after the util has finished, otherwise you may get a message from the OS saying that it can't tell you whether the print has succeeded or not (even though it has). This only happened on my Vista box (enough said) - the W7 box was fine.

Media streaming seems to work nicely, my Sony KDL46EX503 see's the 211J in Music / Photo and Video sources and I've had it playing music / showing photos / streaming movies (even though I'm using some older 85mbps Solwise homeplugs).

There's a nice/free DSAudio app for Android (installed it on the HTC Desire) and music streaming works, although only over WiFi - I'm not totally convinced how useful this is, as surely you put music on a portable device so that it's erm.. portable.

The DSPhoto app (again from Android) installs, but like quite a few other people have found - it doesn't want to connect to the media server and constantly says that the credentials aren't recognised.

The differences between the 210J and the 211J seems to be very slight, the major upgrade seems to be the CPU (up from 800mhz to 1.2ghz). This is a feature packed device and (IMHO) certainly does require a certain amount of computer/network knowledge to extract the very best. That said, the supplied install CD does do a lot of work for you if only the basic functionality of a NAS device is needed.

I've got my system running in the Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) mode, which afaik is just Raid 1 when you have disks of the same size, but it can also offer a Raid 1'esque facility with differently sized disks giving Raid 1 capacity up to the size of the smaller disk. You can also use just 1 physical disk (I started off testing with an old 500gb drive whilst waiting for the 1 Tb's to turn up).

After extensive research I eventually decided upon the Synology DS211J. I wanted it to help with the storeage of many additional data and to help free up space on my C drive.

I teamed the unit with two Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2TB 32MB 5400RPM 3.5 inch SATA-II Internal Hard Drive - OEM, available from Amazon.

When both items arrived I set them up immediately. The Synology is easy to put together, and the two drives slot in easily. Load on the Software onto your PC and away you go. The unit is set up with a few clicks and some naming of drives and units. It really is that easy. You don't need to be a network administrator trust me.

Once the volumes had been completed the Synology worked like a dream from the off. My data was transfered at a rapid rate and at least I have the peace of mind knowing that it's safely stored. I hooked it through the supplied network cable, and through my broadband hub.

The unit goes into sleep mode whilst not in use and when being used is really quite quiet.

The design of the unit is sleek and modern looking. Its small size means that I can store it on my desk, without it taking up lots of space.

I think I've only just scratched the surface of what the unit can do, with software provided for remote camera access, iTunes and audio and photo station facilities.

For the money this is top draw and something I highly recommend.

Five stars all the way.

Synology DS211j 22 Jan 2011
Firstly to clear up the nomenclature of Synology: DS - DiskStation, 211 - 2-bay, 2011 model, j - Small Office Home (SOHO). I spent a fair amount of time researching the various NAS options to run with my iMac. Essentially I wanted to store my CDs ripped via lossless into iTunes to run my Sonos wireless music system. I decided that RAID 1 was the way to go and have purchased two 2TB Samsung Eco green drives to go into the NAS.

Putting the disks into the station is really easy and although the more expensive drives have a simpler method; provide you can use a screwdriver and are not totally ham-fisted then it's not a problem - they even give you extra screws in case you drop one.
Setting up the drives is straightforward and there is good stuff on the Synology website and generally on the Web if your search around. I'm reasonably technically savvy but not a compute geek and it was fine.

The DSM software is really good in its 3.0 version - suggest you download the most recent version from Synology rather than use the CD version supplied, although it will update. The Synology Assistant helps you set it all up. I would do this of an evening and leave the disks to format overnight - 2TB volume at RAID 1 took about 8 hours to cook. Setting up the NAS in DSM 3.0 and the users and permissions is very simple via their "Quickstart" icon and then telling iTunes to store stuff there via "Preferences" is a doddle - again lots of useful info on the Web.

The pdf guides via Synology's website are worth taking a look through before starting and are helpful - there's a million things that I don't need but others may want.

I've been very happy so far - it does what I wanted it to, I can understand what's going on, the software works and its very quite.

There are cheaper systems around but his is top drawer in my opinion and the software to manage it is truelly excellent - 5 stars.
