Fantastic Item 20 Feb 2010
I did extensive reviewing before buying NAS drive and discovered lots of very negative reviews for the likes of D-Link, Buffalo, Netgear and co. In fact the Synology was the only product where the vast majority of the owners seemd very happy. As such I put my faith in this company and have not regretted it for one minute.

OK - here's the good points:
- very fast (so long as you use Gigabit ethernet)
- extremely simple to configure initially and through web interface
- lots of "extras" e.g. Itunes server, photo server, print server, torrent download client, web based file viewer for extremely fast moving/deleting of files
- can also download a mail server although I haven't tried that
- very flexible set up for creation of shared folders and access control
- very reliable - haven't rebooted mine for 2 weeks now
- 3 usb ports - I use one for a USB backup drive for 2nd level backups, I use the other for a laser printer
- "1 touch copy" from usb memory sticks
- sleep mode - disk stops when computers not using it
- very quiet
- does unattended (scheduled) backups - I do mine in the middle of the night to the external usb

And the bad points:
- not too fast when mainipaulting 1000s of small files
- ..er and that's about it!

Phil.

Review 15 July 2010
By Kit
I think this is a fabulous bit of kit. It is packed with facilities and features and very easy to set up.
I would have bought it just to be a print server, but I use it for so much more.
It is great as a back-up device, and it allows me to get at files even when I am away from home. The media server can talk through the network to my PS3, which means I can get at the whole of my media collection and I am not limited by the 40Gig on the PS3.
I have recommended to several colleagues at work, and one has already bought one.
You do need to understand a bit about IP ports and router configuration to use it on the net. But if you are just using it on your own net it is very simple to set up.

Having spent considerable time researching NAS drives and reading many reviews, I opted for this unit as it's spec appeared to have everything I needed/wanted and the reviews were positive. This was a good choice.

The drive unit is easy to setup out of the box but sophisticated enough to modify to your requirements. I use it with a 1TB WD drive on both wireless and Local networks. It is fast and low energy (I run on solar power only in Spain so this was important to me). I have a 1GB network and Laptop so needed this from the NAS.

One small downside is that I have found no way of starting or stopping it remotely. This is not major but would have been nice as I use a remote system for all my other devices. I have to push the front power button to turn it on, or off. Shame :-(

I download music and videos from the www starting them off on the PC but "dropping" them onto the "Download redirector" box before powering off my PC and letting the Synology take over using around 15W of power instead of 75W-150W (laptop). I can monitor them from the PC whenever I want but basically they carry on automatically.

Any drive you install within the unit will need reformatting as the unit is basically a cut down computer and network interface so the OS goes onto the drive. Be warned as you will need to copy your data over to another drive before mounting a "used" drive as the main unit otherwise you will lose it. The unit therefore takes up to 1min to power up and 30sec to power down.

The unit is as close to silent as i have heard (or not in this case :-)) - so much better than my Maxtor or Pluscom external drives. The included software is detailed and sufficient though I did download the latest version from synology as it was easy to do.

I use the unit as an external (network) hard drive with mapped drives for music, video etc on my PC system using wireless and it is connected via a 1GB LAN to my Samsung TV, Amp and Humax Sat where it streams music and video without a single hitch and at more than required speed even for HD.

All in all an excellent piece of kit.

Oh, one more thing. I am using Windows 7 (Soooo much better than Vista and up there with XP) and the Synology integrates with it beautifully. Very slick.
