Before I begin I must make it clear that this is my first foray into the world of NAS, and I decided on this DS212+ after a week of reading and research on the net. So you can assume that I am a 'noob' and if you are a 'noob' too you might find my review more helpful than if you're an experienced NAS user already.

Ultimately all I wanted was a machine that supported RAID1 to mirror 1 disk on to another. Up until today all my data has been kept on my PC with no mirror anywhere. I was worried that should a disk fail I'd have lost many years of photos, music and video. After reading about what other things a NAS might be capable of, I decided to splash out maybe a little more than I needed so that I could experiment and maybe ask more of the device than a cheaper model may be capable of. I've only had the NAS less than a week and I haven't even scratched the surface of useful functions that this device has. So first of all, setting the device up as RAID1 and copying all my data to it was an incredibly simple process thanks to the brilliant guides on the Synology website and the step by step setup on the NAS itself. Next I mapped the new shared drive to all the PCs in the house, which is as simple as sharing any drive from a PC on a network.

Next step is sharing the NAS over the internet so that I can map it to my netbook when I'm out and about, and install the Android applications so I can stream media into my phone. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in because I'm confident it will be made as easy as possible thanks to the awesome UI and aforementioned guides on the website.

The UI is laid out brilliantly, it's pleasing to look at and suffers no lagging or crashing at all.

Synology NAS enclosures are so much more than just storage as they provide numerous additional features. The Synology DiskStation DS212+ is designed to be an energy efficient server that can manage media, print, downloads, surveillance and mail. If you are a proud Android or iPhone/iPod Touch owner you can remotely interact with the DiskStation as well via a downloaded app.
The DiskStation DS212+ includes an Ethernet cable, software CD, several HDD mounting screws, welcome paper, warranty information paper and the AC power adapter and is packaged in an aesthetically pleasing box which is no bigger than it needs to be.

The DS212+ is billed as a high performance NAS for business users. However I found it perfect for streaming HD content and it offers an average speed of 109 MB/sec reading and 56 MB/sec writing speeds under RAID 1. And this would be my first choice for a home solution, especially if your household has multiple users accessing multiple content. You will really benefit from the extra cpu speed and ram.

The enclosure itself is extremely well built and sturdy. The front panel comes away to allow drive access and this feels very sturdy with rubber grommets to reduce vibration. The unit has the Synology logo cut out of the sides which is a very hand way to increase ventilation. More air equals lower temps which in turn reduce the fan minimising noise.
Opening the Synology DiskStation DS212+ is a simple case of removing a panel to the front of the unit and unclipping the HDD bays. This is much better than the lower end models which require the whole unit opening. It allows quick and simple installation and access to the hard drives. Connectivity wise for the extra money you also get an SD card slot and usb port to the front and a pair of USB 3.

I bought this NAS as an upgrade to an old D-Link DNS-323. What a difference! I remember some years ago, that I decided to go for the cheapest model from D-Link, instead a Synology one, clearly I made a mistake. If you have the money, this NAS will serve you well, satisfying probably all your needs, and some more that you didn't yet think about. Even if quite expensive, when compared with other NAS, for all the feature it offers (basically a mini-server), it is quite a bargain.

This my second Synology NAS,
It's a great looking device, with a simple Black plastic casing surrounding a metal frame. Installation of the hard drives is a doddle using the two simple push in tray system. The front of the device has a large blue LED lit power button as well as status LEDs for installed HDDs, the DiskStation itself and LAN. At the rear are the USB 3.0 ports, the LAN port and the power adaptor port. A USB 2.0 port with a quick copy button is also located on the front of the device.

The set up and use of the NAS system is intuitive and easy to follow, every aspect of the device could easily be managed by a complete novice and support is available in the form of quick start and full manuals as well as a dedicated forum and a detailed Wiki which between them cover everything you could possibly want to know. The Synology helpdesk is also very helpful and I received prompt helpful responses every time I contacted them.

The web interface (DiskStation Manager ) for the device is second to none, providing access to all of the above features in a stable environment with clear options for every application of the device. You can even keep shortcut icons for your most frequently used controls on the desktop, or search for the controls you want by keyword.

Creating user accounts is quick and easy, with sophisticated options such as setting quotas and emailing the user their account details, all available from a single, easy-to-understand tabbed window.
The advanced features are just as impressive, such as the ability to act as a web server, Dynamic DNS support so you don't need a static IP address and an iPhone app for accessing files remotely.
