This is a re-release of the original 1987 CD: Mahler: Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'.

Mahler's 2nd is in my view one of the most dramatic of his 9 symphonies, and the most optimistic (possibly with the exception of his delightful 4th). The impact of the contrasting moods (and volume) is impressive, and the final movement in particular allows one's spirit to soar (as may be implied by the title 'Resurrection'). Listening to this music in the right mood really does come close to a religious experience. I have not heard a more awe-inspiring performance since I bought this disc in 1990.

The CD was a Penguin Classical CD guide Rosette winner and Gramophone Record of the Year in 1988. This performance was probably one of the main reasons for the rise of the CBSO under Simon Rattle to international fame during the 1980's.

Simon Rattle has a reputation for this piece nad this recording reflects his greatness in conducting it. My only slight hesitation is that the soprano has a degree of 'wobble' on some of the longer notes that is typical of some singers but I don't particularly like. Overall, however, it is well recorded and a very good interpretation of the piece.

I enjoyed this rendition. It stands up very well to the best and is more to my taste than many others.
Music is, of course, a question of personal taste. Each listener will enjoy what they prefer so its always going to be subjective when reviewing a rendition.

A deeply moving performance of the Resurrection Symphony. 2 Jan 2013

Strong, dramatic and dynamic contrasts of tempo and volume - the caressing and comforting voice of Janet Baker questioning existence and insisting on our place in creation and the carefully building and increasingly complex finale is thouroughly satisfying. I love Bruno Walter's NY Philharmonic recording but the fresh sound and Rattle's dramatic reading tells me that I will be listening to this recording over and over again.
