5.0 out of 5 stars Transport yourself to a beautiful new world 22 Sep 2012
By M. D. Holley TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The central movement of this symphony is something really special. Glass has created here a whole new sound world, quite unlike any other music from Glass or any one else. It is very beautiful, somehow very vulnerable and fragile. The texture has a slightly clumsy nature, in a very appealing and touching way. You would need to hear it to see what I mean. I think it one of the very best things he has ever done.

It is impressive that Glass at a relatively advanced age is able to break through to brand new ground. And pleasing that innovation is still happening (much 'establishment' music coming from academically approved composers seemingly finds it hard to imagine anything new).

While some of the music has immediate appeal, it does require repeated and concentrated listening to grasp properly. I am sure some listeners may jump to the conclusion that it lacks depth or repeats what Glass did before on the basis of a single superficial hearing. Worthwhile music takes effort.

I recently sat slightly frustrated through a performance of Bruckner 9 (by Haikink and the Vienna Philharmonic) at the proms. There is no doubt in my mind which 9th is the greater!

Highly recommended to those in search of new sounds of wonder and delight!

5.0 out of 5 stars 9th Symphony by Glass 12 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is one of his finest compositions, if you already have a passion for Glass' music then this is a must for your collection, if you don't then listen to the second movement to be found on Youtube and be converted.

5.0 out of 5 stars frequent buyer 23 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
my wife and I love Glass, he type of music stirs energis within us which only he and others like Michael Nyman seem to do. It is probably becaause he is not afraid to outside of the norm and just writes and performs pieces which I think are very important to him, he actually feels his perfomance, as always an absolutely stirring performance, well done, loved it

1.0 out of 5 stars symphonist, not 29 May 2012
By Heebee
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For the sleeve-note to suggest that Glass is the most important American symphonist, or the most varied anywhere since Beethoven, is nonsense, and an insult to every other 20th century symphonist. Sadly, this is the now usual re-hash of everything old-Glass, the same tricks simply played on different combinations of instruments (some unpleasantly strident), the same unvarying rhythms. To my ear there can't be more than 10 minutes - at most - of truly new material, some of which, to give it its due, is quite interesting, but almost everything else we have heard before in one guise or another. I'm not a musicologist, so can't be sure, but I wonder if this piece is technically actually a symphony, though whether it is or not doesn't make the experience any more pleasurable.
