I make bold to recommend a recording which, at the time I am writing the review, you have to sign up for in order to get as it is not in stock at Amazon. I do not know if they just don't have it or if it is a re-issue that has not been released as yet. All I can say is that from earlier incarnations of this performance it is in my opinion the best recording of Stenhammar's more successful symphony. Stig Westerberg chooses the exactly correct tempi and manages to produce the feeling of an earlier age into what is essentially a romantic conception - just as Stenhammar wanted. The playing of the orchestra is peerless.
This is a superb symphony with strongly marked-out rhythms and melodies and a sense of real apotheosis at the end. The main theme of the first movement is so eminently hummable that I had difficulty getting it out of my mind! When it arrives it probably won't be in large numbers so it is worthwhile putting in a pre-order. Such a fine symphony needs to be better known

A timeless classic

Stenhammar's 2nd Symphony is a "hidden gem" of the literature. The BIS and DG performances of this piece go for fleetness of foot, which makes for an exciting experience. Westerberg, on the other hand, takes a broader view in the first movement. This brings out its bardic underpinnings and imparts a touch of solemnity. The playing is, of course, idiomatic, and the recorded sound is fine. I would not want to be without the BIS, with its exhilarating coupling "Excelsior!", but Westerberg's recording is the one I would take as part of my desert island collection.
