A very ordinary Bruckner Second, not a high point in Janowski's cycle 26 Jun. 2013
By Santa Fe Listener - Published on Amazon.com
The buyers who are attracted to Marek Janowski's almost complete Bruckner cycle - it will end with Sym. no. 4 in the fall - are probably after the SACD surround sound, which is warm and clear as heard in two-channel stereo. Musically, the journey has had its ups and downs. This reading of the 1877 edition of Sym. 2 is one of the downs. It begins with a nice sense of tense expectation, but within minutes Janowski lapses into ordinariness, at times merely beating time. The Scherzo is particularly flabby, the finale proceeds by putting one foot ahead of the other. Only some tender care in the slow movement made me want to keep listening.

The most exciting Bruckner Second to come my way is Simone YOung's with the Hamburg Phil., also in excellent sound, although she uses the original version. Comparing Young's approach to the finale, which has real momentum and build, with Janowski's walk in the park is eye-opening. Giulini made a specialty of this score, using a later version. Both are far preferable to Janowski in every way but recorded sound, and there Young is certainly competitive.
Bravo! 6 Sept. 2014

Janowski takes the 3rd movement much slower than other conductors, but with beautiful effect. It makes for an interesting reading and gives more passion and depth to the scherzo. Yet, there is no shortage of intensity. If you love Bruckner #2 as much as I do you will want to add this unique performance to your collection. The entire album is excellently recorded.

Just good 1 Aug. 2013
By Jason de Kehoe - Published on Amazon.com

While I nice addition to the catalogue this recording does not surpass other offerings such as Gilbert/NY or Skrow/Saarbrucken. That being said it is still a cogent performance recorded with great clarity and space.
