5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning night of a thousand stars 8 Mar 2007

There is certain to be something for everyone on this amazing DVD. This exceptional program will grow to be an old friend. Each time you watch it you will discover some new gem hidden away in the tracks of the disc. Pick one performance and watch it several times until you know it intimately, then move on to something else or watch the whole spectacular. My personal favorite is Kenneth Branagh, Charlton Heston and Patrick Doyle presenting a Concert Suite from Henry V. Mr. Branagh performs full speeches from the play, "Oh for a muse of fire...", "Once more unto the breach dear friends...", The St. Crispin's Day speech, and "Let there be sung Non Nobis and Te Deum." This last song is sung by composer Patrick Doyle and the Philharmonia Choir. All numbers are backed up by symphonc music from the movie played by The English Chamber Orchestra. Mr Heston also performs a dramatic reading of the Moses story from Deuteronomy. Placido Domingo, Ofra Harnoy, Jessye Norman are also featured. The English Chamber Orchestra performs Saint-Saens, Verdi, and Handel. It is a visual stunning presentation. Performed outside, huge images are projected against the side of the Salisbury Cathedral. A totally enjoyable and joyful evening to be lived over and over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Symphony DVD missed something 9 Jan 2010

I attended this function and I bought this DVD becuase I was sure it would be much better than my home made video. It was a lovely evening and we waited for the fashionably late Prince Charles and Princess Diana to make their appearance so the concert could start. Four laser lights illuminated the cross on top of the spire and laser medieval scenes were projected on the cathedral walls throughout the evening. My disappointment in this DVD is that Phil Collins was totally left out and, of course, he was a huge favorite that evening. Charleton Heston was magnificent and his poetry readings of American poets was wonderful. What a voice that man had.

A little trivia: The Salisbury cathedral is the name commonly used even amongst the locals but the real name of the church is St. Marys and it has the tallest spire in all of England. And yes, we bought a piece of the 'old' spire which were being sold to raise additional funds for the restoration.
