Frederic Cliffe's first symphony of 1889 is by any stretch a remarkable compositional debut, finely imagined, purposeful and assured - one would hardly imagine that it was not only his first symphony but also his first significant composition. It would be unwise (and unfair to Cliffe) to compare it to Brahms' first symphony as in stature and style they are far removed from one another but such is the confidence of Cliffe's work I couldn't help but be reminded of Schumann's description of Brahms "springing forth, fully armed, like Athena from the head of Zeus".

If Brahms isn't a significant influence, the symphony does display a keen awareness of musical developments on the continent however and there are echoes of both Wagner and Bruckner in Cliffe's use of the brass, the presence of which is a notable (and atmospheric) one throughout - whether it be evocative horn calls, sonorous chorales or passages like their haunting and darkly burnished appearance before the recapitulation in the opening 'Allegro non troppo'. Indeed, Cliffe's command of his orchestral forces is remarkable generally - the sound of the cor anglais adds a distinctive colour to the proceedings in all but the scherzo and the instrument comes into its own in the expansive and beautiful 'Andante con espressione', titled "Ballade" in the score; it's little wonder this richly-endowed and melodious piece of echt-Romanticism became a popular concert item in its own right.

From a structural point of view, Cliffe seems to have an innate talent for symphonic form and the music has an organic sense of flow and development; climaxes are keenly judged and very effective.

A wonderful piece, influenced by Bruckner and Wagner, the composer's Opus 1! Listen to the closing pages of the first movement and it's like a Bruckner symphony that you haven't heard before. Repays repeated listening - which it's getting.

If ,like me, you keep looking for undiscovered gems from the wealth of classical music now on release then for once look no further. This symphony would and should be played by top orchestras if it received more publicity. Romantic, with tunes, and more than adequately played by The Malmo Opera Orchestra. Cliffe wrote a violin concerto which is also available along with d"Erlanger's Violin Concerto on Hyperion, and a 2nd Symphony which needs recording. Sit back and enjoy an undemanding but rewarding work.
