These wonderful symphonies, commissioned by the venerable Baron van Sweiten are very enjoyable and very Emmanuel Bachish. With his usual querky mannerisms and unique uses of harmony, C.P.E. Bach really composed some unique music. Always interesting, Bach experiments structurally and looks for local effects to keep your attention. I especially enjoy the second and fifth symphonies in this set. These symphonies flow continuously into the next movement. They are all three movement symphonies with a fast-slow-fast format.
Though not as well known as the four Wq 183 symphonies, these symphonies for strings have a vibrant energy that makes them a valuable part of your classical collection. In this particular recording, Pinnock and his crew perform the symphonies marvelously. I've never heard a better presentation of these symphonies than Pinnock and the English Concert. Hard to find, but worth it.
