CPO, in all its wisdom and intelligent programming, has made this series worth having just by combining works of different times in the composer's oeuvre. If not, you might run the chance to find Panufnik's late music monotonous and slow moving. I like earlier Panufnik, before he became so esoterisc an enamoured with forms, patterns and geometry (and I am a Math teacher!)
It is always attractive to try to get your inspiration from some shape or line in seek of compelling music (Villalobos did it with Manhattan's skyline, with innocous consequence) but to me, the results remains dubious and true inpiration seems absent. Even though it really has its moments, Symphony 6 (Mistica) seems to fall into that category. Still, I admit I should give it a few more hearings to see whether listening without the "geometry" is compelling.
The rest of this program is really good, with some truly exciting chunks. But what fascinates me the most is the way CPO (as do other truly serious German/European labels) produces these releases. The 4-lingual liner notes are superb (their English translations have improved notably) the performances outstanding, and the recording is truly wonderful. In fact, I have noticed how some of the best sounding recordings are coming from Poland Radio in the last few years (check some in Naxos!).
Both Panufnik's cause and CPO deserve the five stars and my commendation. Now to Volume 4.
