The cover of this CD boasts 15 Classic Instrumental Interpretations...what you get is 15 Beatles songs brilliantly performed by the RPO, but spoiled (IMHO) by somebody's decision to drench a few of the pieces in sickly choral singing which kind of defeats the object. Surely, instrumental versions should be precisely that and therefore not have loads of choirs singing all over them! Having said that, the orchestral arrangements are superb and probably the best I've ever heard of Beatles material done in this way. I just wish the choral stuff had been left off and the melodies instead be carried by the orchestra - after all, the tunes are strong enough. The track selection is good (the Abbey Road medley being an inspired choice although sadly we only get a part of the sequence and not the whole 22 minutes) and any orchestral CD that features Hey Jude, Something, I Am The Walrus, A Day In The Life and Let It Be has to be worth checking out if you are a fan of the Beatles' music, as I am. The only weak choices are Free As A Bird and Real Love, which I think were not really suited to this album - far better would have been versions of classic ballads such as Here, There & Everywhere, Norwegian Wood or Yesterday (all of which are sadly absent). For this reason it falls just short of being a 5-star CD so I will give it 4 stars. In a crowded market space - CDs featuring orchestral arrangements of Beatles music seem to be everywhere at the moment - this is probably the best in its class.
