Power users looking to get the best performance out of their PC will find Norton SystemWorks 2001 offers a fine collection of tune-up and diagnostics tools. It is a strong partnership that comprises the well-respected Norton Utilities along with Norton AntiVirus and Norton CleanSweep.
Installation is a smooth affair as you can select individual utilities or load all the main components although Windows NT and 2000. Professional users will find some utilities such as the Registry Tracker, Norton Diagnostics and registry optimisation tools are not available. System Doctor provides a floating toolbar of graphs and charts showing system performance and works in tandem with WinDoctor and Disk Doctor that lend a helping hand whenever a Windows or hard disk problem is spotted. A rescue disk set gets your PC out of dire straits and SystemWorks also supports a Zip and floppy disk boot combo that will get you back into Windows.
Norton AntiVirus provides a real-time scanner which denies access to a file and cleans it if it suspects an infection. Internet downloads come under this umbrella and e-mail attachments don't escape either. Full system scans can be scheduled regularly and LiveUpdate will automatically download the latest virus definitions from Symantec's Web site. Norton CleanSweep keeps hard disk clutter under control by removing unwanted applications, redundant files and Internet rubbish but can also analyse applications and move them from one hard disk or folder to another, archive them into a compressed file or transport them to another PC.
SystemWorks is accessible to a wide range of experienced users as the documentation is informative and the entire suite is easily controlled from a single interface. The entire package is easy to install and presents its user with a common easy to use interface to all 3 components. Optimal configuration is largely automatic and default settings should suit most users. The virus scanner effectively scans all incoming mail for malicious code without user intervention and on detecting virus infected code presents the user with a number of options. Liveupdate ensures that the checker remains up to date giving the user extra reassurance. The virus scanner however does scan incoming AOL mail and appears to cause a multitude of problems when run on AMD K6 CPUs. Cleansweep offers little in the way of usefulness, many of its cleaning tasks can easily be performed by a relatively inexperienced user without this package. The advanced clean up options are best avoided and I would certainly recommend backing up all files before accepting changes as the registry sweep has an alarming habit of finding "problems" every time. The Norton utilities run effectively although seem to offer little that isnt already included in Windows. To summarise, the only component of this package I would recommend is Norton Antivirus 2001 and then only if not running on an AMD K6 CPU.
This piece of software is excellent value. Firstly, the disk management systems truely keep your system running at top spec - you're also able to fully custom them to your needs. They get rid of clutter in the quickest way possible. No more searching through files and folders to see what you want to get rid of. Secondly, is the Anti-Virus, atomatically updates itself for you - so no searching websites for updated definitions. It also recives definitions on a regular basis - unlike others. I could go on listing things here, but . . . Finally - its user friendly, looks nice and is glitch free.
The best all round package to keep your system up and running. Support from the symantec site and staff is also excellent. There is an upgrade version also available...
