Amazon.co.uk Review

Protect your PC from Internet attack the easy way with Norton Personal Firewall 2003.

It's not enough just to run anti-virus software any more. Especially if you've got a broadband connection or you spend a lot of time online, you need a personal firewall to keep an eye on hackers trying to get at your computer. This is a complex area and unless you're a security expert, you need a program that's simple to configure but that also offers strong protection.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 fits the bill on both counts. When you install it the instructions walk you through configuring your system by choosing network settings and scanning your PC for programs that access the Internet. It knows about common applications, so you won't have to tweak umpteen settings to get your e-mail working and the helpful dialogues explain the risks of allowing or blocking access. You can't migrate custom settings from a previous version of the package, but you do get stronger protection with this version.

Not only does it block port scans (where a hacker tests your connection to the Internet, trying to get access), but Personal Firewall 2003 also checks all the data entering and leaving your computer, looking for anything suspicious. If it spots suspicious data transfers, it checks the signature database (like the definitions in an anti-virus package and updated in the same way through LiveUpdate). This protects you against Trojans and worms such as Nimda and Code Red.

When a program does something unexpected, the pop-up messages are informative rather than worrying and it's clear what you need to do. In an emergency you can completely block Internet access and if you want to track down an intruder, the graphical map shows you where in the world they are. Setting options for controlling programs is simple, if a little long-winded--because there are simply so many options for choosing exactly what access you want to allow. The options for configuring the way the firewall works are more complex, and you do need to understand security to work with them, but you don't need to change the advanced settings at all to be well protected.

You can also protect yourself on the Web; turn on Ad Blocking to get rid of irritating pop-up ads from Web sites. You can also choose what information a site sees about you and your browser, turn off animations, scripts and Flash or block ads on the page itself; a number of sites are pre-configured for you.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 blocks all of the common attacks, making your PC invisible as well as secure online, and it does it without making your applications hard to use or demanding you become a security expert. It gives you excellent protection on its own and it's even more of a bargain if you get it as part of Norton Internet Security 2003. --Mary Branscombe

Manufacturer's Description

Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall 2003 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Its robust defenses include intrusion detection, application control, and privacy protection--all in one easy-to-use program. Norton Privacy Control easily prevents confidential data from being sent over the Internet without your knowledge. It protects personal information in email, instant messages, and Microsoft Office attachments. All this power is readily accessible, with built-in assistance that helps you get started quickly and respond to threats effectively. And LiveUpdate keeps Norton Personal Firewall current with regular, automatic downloads of security updates to defend against new threats. Don't allow your PC and your personal information to be vulnerable on the Internet. Get Norton Personal Firewall 2003 today for powerful defense against hackers and privacy threats. 4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for Internet access, 19 Jan 2003
This review is from: Norton Personal Firewall 2003 (CD-ROM)
Norton Personal Firewall 2003

After antivirus software a firewall is the second most important security tool for anyone with a PC that connects to the Internet either by dial-up or always-on connection. Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall 2003 is one of the top two firewall products available in this field. You can not go wrong with this product. However, if you have Windows XP then this comes bundled with a basic firewall and you should consider if the extras in Norton's firewall are worth the cost. If you do run another firewall product on Windows XP don't forget to disable XP's bundled firewall.

The product installed with no problems on my system. Registration and on-line updates worked smoothly. If you have any other Norton products installed then firewall will seemless add its menu options to the Norton Security Center giving you access to all Norton tools from one menu. The firewall options settings can be password protected which is useful if more than one person uses the PC.

The standard configuration does notify you of alerts and messages which may appear alarming at first. The facility to track where the alarm came from is interesting, e.g.I traced my first alert and the software even showed a map of California with x marks the source!

Unlike XP's bundled firewall Norton Personal firewall also prevents unauthorised outbound connections so you can do your bit to stop spyware and Trojans.

Some of the add-ons to the firewall are useful. e.g. it maintains a list of know addresses for common advert sites and blocks these some saving valuable download time. This list is kept uptodate using the same on-line update tool as Norton Anti-virus.

The product would have got 5 stars if were not for two minor downsides:

The pop-up blocker is limited and pop-up windows would still appear but without any contents which is more annoying than the full pop-up ads themselves. There are freeware pop-up killers on the web that do a better job than Norton's pop-up blocker.

There is also a cookie control but this is very basic and is limited to allow all, alert each time a cookie is encountered and block all cookies. Internet Explorer has better cookie control built in.

If you don't have a virus checker you can get better value for money by buying Norton's Internet Security which includes: firewall, antivirus and other Internet Security tools such as parental control.

5.0 out of 5 stars So worth the money, 8 Aug 2003

A must for anyone that is surfing the web on a regular basis, especially for broad band. The useful little bit of software has prevented several attempts to hack my computer since having it installed - it's amazing how many people out there are trying to get information from you.

Easy to use, easy to update and would recommend it to anyone

Norton Personal Firewall is a must for anyone using the internet, even through a dial up connection. I bought this software because I was getting concerned about the security of my computer whilst on the Internet, and I now have complete peace of mind. I already own a copy of Norton Antivirus 2003, and after installing Norton Personal Firewall I noticed that the two integrate to give the user a complete Internet security package, along with peace of mind.

After installation you have to go through a "wizrard" to set up the software, but from then on you can be assured that your computer has the best protection from nasties whilst online (especially if you have Norton Antivirus too!)

If you use the Internet and have no firewall then buy this software now!
