I looked at Ghost along with several other products to enable me to upgrade my hard drive. I needed to clone my Windows XP OS from a 80GB disk to a new 200GB disk, this I reasoned would save me doing a fresh install and spending hours re-installing my software. Ghost seemed to be recommended by the experts and it seemed a quick and easy process.

Alas, whilst Ghost installs easily and its user interface is easy to navigate and the Copy My Hard Drive function is quick, the new cloned drive hung every time at the Windows welcome screen. I was able to find a Symantec help document with suggested work arounds but this required delving deep into the workings of Windows XP which I think is beyond most users. It was only after several hours and doing the final suggested work around that I managed to clone my hard drive and it is now running flawlessly. Interestingly the document was dated 2 weeks ago and I note Symantec have issued no updates yet for Ghost 10 - I hope this is because they are working hard on a fix as I suspect they will be getting a lot of calls about this.
The backup worked well to a USB external drive and I was also able to recover the back up from it too. So whilst I think it is a good product thay don't seem to have sorted the bugs yet.

I too bought Nortons Ghost to upgrade my hard drive from a 40Gig to a shiny new 250Gig drive. Tried the copy drive facility, it told me the drive had been copied sucessfully, but when tried, the new image would not boot.

I proceeded to hunt for information on Symantec's own website, and any sites that delivered a search result. Symantec had a few pages of workarounds, none of which delivered the goods. A search showed that many people have had the same problem.

So I tried using the Recovery disk route to recover the image of my old drive to my new one. Alas, no amount of Jiggery-Pokery has been able to make this work, so I'm going to resort to one of the other products on the market.

My conclusion is that if its not good for copying a disk, and its not good for restoring a backed-up image, then it really has been a waste of money for me! Save your pocket money, buy something else!

Good if it works 6 Mar 2007
After I installed this it wouldn't recognise my system partition. I read about similar problems that people have had online so decided to reinstall (as this seemed to fix the problem for others). After I had uninstalled it Windows couldn't see my external firewire HDD at all. Also shortly after installing this, my clock started showing anomalous times. As I had seen such strange behaviour and others have also had strange things with there system after installing this I decided not to reinstall as I need to be able to trust my backup software (kinda the point). I had rather more success with Ghost 8.2 that comes on the recovery CD. But I don't see the point of paying for version 10 and then only using 8.2, and I'm a bit annoyed at how buggy this is, even after running live update. When it works this is an excellent program (I know from previous versions), but this is a bit too buggy to recommend. I have heard that the original Ghost stopped at 8.2 and from then on "Ghost" is actually Power Quest Drive Image rebranded as Ghost. This could explain why I have ended up with a product far inferior than I was expecting.
