Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

PowerQuest's DriveImage is probably the best-known backup and data security product around. The new version works under Windows with a wide range of media types.

DriveImage 7.0 does pretty much what it says on the box: it creates images of the contents of your drives, compresses them and saves them in case of disaster. Should you have drive or system failure, you can reinstall an image created by the program onto a new volume and everything about your old system should still be intact: programs, data files, settings; even the way you've laid out your desktop.

DriveImage 7.0 of the program works mainly under Windows. This is where you create the image to back-up the entire drive, not just selected data. Restoration involves using the DriveImage 7.0 CD to start up the PowerQuest Recovery Environment (PQRE) and reinstate the drive from its image.

Both back-up and restore operations are Wizard-driven, and the back-up Wizard leads you step by step through selecting the drive you want to image, the place you want to put the image and the level of compression. A drive image can be less than half the size of the drive it represents and DriveImage 7.0 is intelligent enough to include only areas of the disk that contain data.

Creating an image is comparatively quick with (in our tests) 3.2 GB of data on a 5 GB drive compressing to 2 GB and taking under 12 minutes to save to a Peerless Firewire external hard drive.

There are a couple of things of particular note regarding DriveImage 7.0. Firstly, it requires Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional to run. If you're running an earlier version of Windows, you must use DriveImage 2002, a copy of which is included in the DriveImage 7.0 box, but you miss out on many of the features of the newer product.

Secondly, you need 256 MB of main memory. Although you can run the program in 128 MB and save a drive image, you need the extra memory whenever you restore an image to your system. Your PC must also be able to start up from a bootable CD to run the PQRE from the DriveImage 7.0 disc.

With those two provisos, DriveImage 7.0 is certainly easier to use than its predecessors, and the ability to save images to external drives or network volumes is a big bonus. --Simon Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars Sanity Saving Backup Tool, 8 Aug 2003
This review is from: Drive Image 7.0 (CD-ROM)
I cannot count the number of times I have installed some software on my machine that has resulted in me having to spend 2 days reinstalling everything from scratch. I'm not talking viruses here, just normal paid-for software.

Drive Image 7, has been my saviour! I can store my whole 12Gb C: drive on 2 DVDs (using highest compression setting) or on my external firewire hard disk and restore the whole machine in 50 mins, even if I am unable to boot the PC normally. A CD is supplied that allows you to boot into a PowerQuest Recovery Environment.

All I can say is that it is a fantastic product that has saved me many wasted hours over the last couple of months. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Drive Image 7 is the best!, 20 Aug 2003

This software is probably the best backup solution to large amounts of data. It works, and it's fast. It does just what is says, and it does it very well. I have been able to backup to my removable USB Hard Drive (80GB), and also to DVD-R, and DVD-RW, and it also works with CDR's and re-writables. I was able to backup 10gb of data (everything, including software, applications, internet and windows settings, and Windows XP Pro) in no more than 16 minutes without compression. One of the most important features is, the ability to back up even hidden, and "used" files such as user registry files, whilst your still using your machine surfing the internet!! Buy it, it's worth every penny. 10 out of 10.

3.0 out of 5 stars Drive Image 7, 3 Jan 2004

Brilliant software for backing up a partition, including the boot partition, provided that the backup is stored on the same hard drive. My XP Pro system will back up and verify 2.8GB in 4 minutes whereas Drive Image 5.01 takes around 18 minutes with equivalent compression and verification. Restoring the boot partition using the Drive Image CD takes about 10 minutes from booting with the Drive Image CD. However the downside is:

i) restoring a bootable image to another hard drive on the same computer will cause a hard stop error when closing Windows, with corruption of the logs in Zone Alarm Pro and XP;

ii) the updates to version 7.01 are 39MB (Windows set up) and 349MB (three hundred and forty nine MB) for the Windows set up and Recovery Environment. The server averages around 23KB/sec download after 30 minutes and times out after 2 hours! Note that Technical Support will issue a replacement CD on request. In my view, Powerquest (now Symantec) should have recalled version 7.0 and provided Resellers with 7.01 CDs

For the user who needs to recover from a problem and who has access to Broadband for the 39MB download, Drive Image 7.01 rates 4.5 stars. For a user with removeable hard drives (caddies)on one computer, or someone without access to Broadband, it rates 1 star. I've chosen 3 stars as there will be a broad spectrum of users. The slower but better option is Drive Image 5.01.
