Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Symantec's Norton Password Manager 2004 keeps your passwords secure and easy to manage. Using the same password for multiple sites is dangerous, but when you make up different passwords, it's difficult to remember all of them. That makes it tempting to write them down somewhere--a very risky strategy.

Norton Password Manager protects against those dangers and streamlines your online activities by storing your passwords in an encrypted file that only you can open. The passwords are kept on your own PC, not on high-profile servers that might be prime targets for hackers. Each member of your family can have one or more password files on the same computer. Once you've created a profile with information such as your address and credit card number, assign a password to the profile and choose how often you'll be asked to verify it. Then run your password-protected applications (such as your email program), visit your favorite secure Web sites, and record the user names and passwords for each. From then on, Norton Password Manager recognizes your programs and sites, and offers to fill in the appropriate information for each one automatically. Don't leave your accounts vulnerable to misuse. Protect your identity online with Norton Password Manager 2004

Norton Password Manager was included as part of my copy of SystemWorks 2004 Professional. Had I bought it as stand-alone software, I'd definitely have felt as though I'd wasted my money! Here are a few of the (lack-of) features...

- Form-filling is limited to 1 variant. For example, John Smith cannot log-in to Hotmail as both 'johnsmith' and 'jsmith' without changing the saved information or switching Profile/user.

- Forms and drop-down menus aren't recognised as the same thing, despite having the same descriptor, e.g. a drop-down menu for a credit card expiry date won't be filled.

- 'Web browser' is synonymous with Microsoft Internet Explorer. There are no other options, so if you prefer a half-decent browser like a Netscape Navigator or a fast one like Mozilla or Opera, you're fresh out of luck (extremely annoying if you've tried a non-Explorer browser and then realised how rubbish Explorer is).

- As with most Symantec products, free online support is none-existent (I only found out about the browser limitation through another Amazon review, the manual completely glosses-over this problem).

There are similar reviews for this product on amazon.com. Right, I'm off to find a working alternative...

Only works with Internet Explorer, not with customised versions such as Crazy Browser.

Depends on how the web-site was built to how accurate the form filling is.

Norton Password Manager 2004 is definitely useful, but don't expect perfection.

Yes, it's old program, but it still works a treat on my PC. I just bought myself an iMac and realised I can't install this user-friendly and smooth-working prog. on Apple. What a shame! Now I'm reading about 1password, similar stuff but for Mac, but this one costs £35 !!! Norton, why don't you write an update for Mac, please?! And maybe make the Manager ignore the "disable autofill" commands from bank sites, that would be great.
